Went to the local EB ps3 launch tonight (was working, so figured i'd stop in) and they only sold 9 units, although are expecting to sell around 20 later in the day.
Had a good chat with both of them, both seemed pretty cluey (were managers, not your run of the mil 16 year old fanboi kid) and they both agreed the 360 was a better choice due to the fact ps3 was not the same as the US version, also the online play wasn't as good as the 360, and also it couldn't handle the processing that the games needed as well as the 360. Though they did say it looked prettier on the surface, they couldnt justify spending 1k on it when clearly the 360 was a better option. So at the ps3 launch, I bought an xbox 360! Heh, bundled with Gears of War for $640, also got CrackDown, xbox live gold (was $100 itself, ps3 is free apparently) and they threw in a free faceplate. All the ps3 fans wern't too happy, but oh well I was.

At the time the original XBox was released I was in the market to upgrade from our trusty PSX. I spent a good solid 2 weeks making up my mind, by reading what I could on both the PS2 and the new XBox.
In the end I went PS2, due to game price and availability. Several people told me to go XBox..."It's cheaper", they said. Well, until you bought the second controller, DVD controller pack, and all the other crap that made it as useable as the PS2. In addition to that the games were limited and expensive. At the moment I'm looking at doing it again, and the tables are turned. Microsoft obviously learned a lot out of that launch and I see that XBox 360 games are plentiful and priced well. Mind you, Sony priced themselves right out of it as far as I'm concerned, because anyone who spend a thousand bucks on a game console is more that a little touched in the head. After moving north, and getting settled, at the end of the year I'll be looking to pick up an XBox 360 for gaming and music/video across the network, and later I'm considering an older style for music storage in the car (modded with a good sized HDD to play all my WMA albums). Quick question....I get the impression that the wireless network card is inbuilt on the XBox 360, is this the case?

I've got an Xbox360 and am not even considering a PS3. Loving the 360 and having an awesome time playing on Xbox live with Call of Duty 3, MotoGP and ChromeHounds.
The F1 game on the PS3 looks amazing but beyond that I'm not terribly interested. I'm not in the market for a BluRay player so its just a games console to me. By the time you end up with 2 wireless controllers, a wireless network card, a wireless headset and a 12 month Xbox Live Gold subscription you're close to a grand for the Xbox360 as well. Quasi: The wireless card isn't built into the Xbox 360, it mounts on the back and plugs into the USB port.

I'm still unsure of whether I'd get one in the next mth or two or wait till end of year. Either way, I'll be sourcing mine from the US, where I can save a couple of hundred bucks.

Come on, we need to know who splashed the cash and bought one....
Or are they still working out how to get online with the console? I would consider a PS3 just for Gran Turismo but, that wont be until the console price package comes below $400-$500 Until then, I am stuck with my trust old PC, which is 4 years old, Still runs just about all new games. has over 1000gig of hard drive space, 2gig of ram, and a dodgey old ATI video card........ |

360 doesn't have a wireless connection, you need to buy an adapter.

The old man was talking to a computer guru and asked him if he thought the PS3 was worth the $1000 spend. The guru replied with "it should be twice that considering what it can do and is capable of"
Think about it. A PC / laptop with the same capabilities would be, what, $3000 - $4000??? |

Played a ps3 today after work. Very good graphics wise and all.. Basically just an upgraded PS2 in my eyes though. I know the controllers are commonplace now, but surely they could have thought of something better? I duno, when I got my PS1 is was something exciting and new, now to ME at least, it seems Sony has gotten to the top and has gotten a little lazy and not as innovative. The thing I like about the 360 (though I wont get one yet either for a while) is that microsoft really listened to the critisicm and came out with something very different to the original xbox (as in size, controllers etc, plus more good games at launch this time). Played the F1 game BTW. Looks great, and though im not much into racing games, had a bit of fun with it. |

yeah i do, i like the fact that i can download all my photos and show people like an album instead of booting up the pc. game play is great, im not a computer whiz so im not to sure about all the mumbo jumbo. and the bluetooth connectivity is gr8 for downloading poictures from my fone. oh and the occasional blu ray disc would be pretty good once i get a hd tv, so yeah its worth it, and i dont like KK. cheers :

Look at the massive lines... massive empty lines.
Myer Toys-R-Us http://au.ps3.ign.com/articles/775/775302p1.html There is a strangly large amount of pic from the Mardi Gras in that artical. But from the sounds of it, they were expecting alot more. The PS3 isn't off to a strong start. |

I know I certainly wouldn't pay $3000/$4000 to degrade my PC to do what a PS3 can do. A PS3 is a purpose built entertainment device which, at least in my opinion, is not worth ~$400 more than an Xbox360 in entertainment value. There's your comparison. |

Here's the argument summed up.
If you're into the most expensive console, want a console capable of watching blu-ray movies, surf the net, wireless, etc etc, then buy a PS3. If you want kickarse online gaming capabilities, a wider and better selection of games (Halo 3?) and a cheaper console, buy the XBOX 360. Everyone has a reason for wanting each console. For me, I'd rather an average desktop computer with heaps of hdd space for downloads, a decent laptop from around 2003, with wireless, and an xbox 360 with xbox live and halo 3. At the moment, I have an xbox 1 with halo 2, pretty good desktop PC with 19" LCD, 300gb of hdd space, etc, and a IBM Thinkpad T30 for uni. I'll be happy when i get a 360 when halo 3 comes out.

Personally I think that the PS3 is a better console, in terms of being future proofed. although it won't really start to kick off until HDTV's become more of a mainstream occurence (i.e. within the next few years), because that is it's main drawcard, it's a full HD console, not like the 360 which is a HD compatible console.
In order to get the same functionality out of the 360, you will spend nearly the same amount as the PS3, so to me it is correctly priced. One thing that I think is much better about the PS3, is the fact you can have up to 9 controllers connected at the same time. (It might seem excessive, but there are a few games that could properly use this). Whilst I like the PS3, I am not going to get one any time soon. I was majorly ****ed off to find out that we got a cut down console. In the US and Japan, there is the PS2 hardware in the console for 100% backwards compatibility, whereas the AUS and Europe version is software based. Besides I already have a 360 and a wii, (I plan on getting the PS3, just a little bit later, when all the bugs get worked out). |

ok well i thought i better own up and say that my brother and i bought one today. got it for $700 after trade ins at EB Games. picked up Resistance: Fall of Man as well for bout $80 and havent been able to stop playing it all day!!! It just seems to do so much and i can definately justify the price tag.
You cant just judge it from a quick play in the games store. You really need to have a good 1-2 hours with it to get into all of the features. Connecting up to the net was a breeze. No additional costs (apart from a longer ethernal cord) and within about 10 mins of connecting we were plying with 30 other people blowing the hell out of each other. Its gonna be a late night for me............................. :
