Everything seems to settle on that 0.70-0.60 range for its final overdrive ratio regardless if its ye olde 4sp auto, 5sp or 6sp manual boxes.

They could do what Holden did and put a 0.50 final drive but the car couldn't pull itself up any slope

You were right, it's not the right place, perhaps start another thread regarding repairs to Rangers?

two words. Development. Costs.

the 10R80 is a diesel gearbox designed to go behind the bi-turbo. the 10R60 is a petrol gearbox designed to go behind all the petrol engines from 2.3 upwards

if we had to develop a diesel application for the 10R60 in parallel - well, we just couldn't. The workload would be tremendous, and the gain would be tiny.

just as an aside - the 10R60 is controlled by an integrated PCM. the 10R80 has a stand alone TCM. They may look similar on paper, but those boxes are very different in reality.

I don't think it would be that simple. It would have to have extended chassis as well I would think.

The 10R80 arrived long before the 10R60 which debuted in the Explorer, Super Duty diesels use 10R140

Chat boards were having arguments regarding strength of the 60 vs 80 but appreciate your technical input, the 60 being an advanced design. Mustang and F150 probably stick with 80 because long term supply contracts and no real need to switch to later gearboxes until major product cycle change.

From what I researched about the two transmission the there was nothing saying one was more robust than the other, but the 10R60 has ratios better suited to the petrol

and as Simon advised
the 10R60 is controlled by an integrated PCM. the 10R80 has a stand alone TCM.

so I don't think its about cost, its just better suited to the petrol and its integrated PCM

Looks more like an extra cab tray.
But yeah, the chassis would have to be 300mm longer between the wheels.
You can get it done on most utes by a third party, but it's obviously cut and shut.

From Simon’s perspective, the 10R80 is the diesel gearbox as far as the Ranger is concerned but has been used before that on lots of F150s and Mustangs. The 10R60 debuted in the RWD Explorer and in particular the gearbox for the 3.0 EB intended as an upgraded unit that works better in the SUV but I would take that to mean most of the mid sized Fords, it’s just a better gearbox.

And the Euro spec versions are down about 100 hp. Which is a huge drop.

Nothing a tune can't fix, unless warranty is a high priority for the Euro version
