That’s where the sun rises first in the world
The line from Napier to Gisborne closed due to storm damage
It was reopened to Wairoa last year for export log trains but that cyclone last year wrecked that section
I don’t know what the status is now but near Gisborne they run those rail bike things

Probably not the best idea.
We once followed the old Hunter Valley, Neath/Cessnock coal line years ago on the mountain bikes.
Started out all good, tracks were rusty, sleepers were broken wood with some fishplates missing, we knew it became active somewhere further down the line but didn't pay much attention to a spur line after Heddon Greta so headed back to the caravan park we had been staying at next to the line.
Later that night we sat outside admiring the stars when we heard a blast and the sound of a diesel chugging way up passed where we though was a dead line. Ooops.

Nice shot! Would have been way cooler with an ALCO on the pointy end not that you would of seen it through the black diesel cloud.

That looks more like a 42 class Clyde EMD in the pic rather than a Goodwin Alco 44 class but seeing as I'm from South Oz i could be wrong.

Being in NSWGR Tuscan red livery at the time the 42 class diesels were all painted with a continuous yellow band along the top edge of the loco.

Where as the 44's only had the yellow sections around the front windows.

I only know a little from my brother being a train geek for 50 years.
He builds super detailed model carriages, steam and diesel loco's for clients.

But must admit I do enjoy sitting by the tracks sometimes filming trains.

So apparently this is a Model 55 railcar.

Started catching the train to school in the mid 60's. Outer Harbour Line S.A. . Only rode them a couple of times, before the Red Hens started.
Very rickety & remember them having a crapper that went straight through to the tracks.
Also a big gap to board & a stairway for boarding at ground level if needed.
My old station was Yerlo & consisted of a small tin shelter & planks.
There was also a post mounted lamp, that could be swung 45 degrees to face the driver & have him stop at night.
Yerlo Station is long gone & replaced with Nth Haven 1km closer to the City.

Pictured at Semaphore Rd Semaphore. Tracks have since been removed.

Another ride to Woy Woy today and because of all the Christmas track work they are running the good old V class Interurban trains.
Ahh these are the most comfortable carriages that the $ydney system runs.
They replaced these a few years ago with that uncomfortable cramped new set to Wyong.

Great to hear the lovely whistle sound the air brake system these unique V sets use.
NSW gov co please bring these older trains back !

We were once staying in Gunning NSW (between Yass and Goulburn) and would ride down the side of main line along the maintenance track to a place call Jerrawa.
We were just taking a short break and spotted the Indian Pacific coming through. We thought WTF it doesn't come this way. (usually straight over the Blue Mountains from $ydney) turns out they had a major rail derailment halfway up the mountain so it was diverted the long way round via Cootamundra and then head west.

Was something to see. no pics.
