I have a soft spot for the E-Series falcons, they were the last to have the true tuff falcon shape. THe way the C-Pillers line up, the short boot and longish nose that leads back to the "mustang bread" falcons starting with the XR.

The AU needs mention, an agressive avant garde design that was launched apon a dull market. It cemented its self as "uglier" alternative to the bland, but safe, Xeroxed commodore. Still, almost 12 years on, the AU still has a fresh shape that hasn't aged like the compition, aspects found in its genious are found in todays newest design.

You'll be amused then to learn that the AU outsold BA/BF combined.

I think this is a fantastic summery of where the AU stood at its time of release.
There is no doubt in 98 it took a Fleet buyer or loyal Ford fan to fork out their hard earned on the AU when the VT was such a success and 'cool to be seen with, however, the AU as it stands now IMHO was a good 10 years ahead of its time.
If we are to judge the 'best' Falcon based on public reaction at time of release, every Falcon bar the AU would, in its day, be the best, then superceeded by the next and so on.
I dont think the FG is the best, but its selling.
The question has no exact answer, it is an individuals opinion and therefore has no 'wrong' answer.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

What you can draw from this topic is an idea of the most favoured from an enthusiasts point of view as thats what the majority of us are.
With this in mind, the AU definately rates as a favourite, albeit in XR or 'T' series form.

Lest we forget your American cousin, the very rare 1970 1/2 Ford Falcon....the last year of the Falcon name in the USA. Only 200 429 Big blocks were built and most were ram air cars.

BA Falcon. Without a doubt. It took the ugly duckling, and made it into one hell of a sexy swan. Even the doors worked for it. The XR8 and the Fairmont Ghia took the cake though, just so bloody hot the pair of them, that bonnet bulge, those beautiful chrome accents. That's the car that brought me back to Ford, and I haven't looked back since.

Cool

My turn again
still love the XD Ghia in V8 form
as for the AUs
well Ive got a Fairmont and had it for going on 8 years
it is the best car I have ever driven (comfort not power)
the better half has a BA Ghia and for comfort the AU runs rings around it
my cloth seats (manual) are so much more comfortable
than her leather power memory seats there is no comparison
people put down the AUs but they still sold 67000 AU1s
I bet Ford wishes that they could make those numbers today
now the XD to XE upgrade well it had to happen and at the
time the talk was they were trying to copy the Rover 3500
I think an XD Ghia 351 auto with rack and pinion steering
and big wheels and twin pipes
well that would be awesome
thanks John
ps I bought my first Falcon an XK in 1970 for $60
and the last the old ladies Ghia in 2007 for $15000
and about 20 in between

Strange, I was under the belief that my last 3 FPV's wore ford badges on the front, rear and steering wheel.

Nope, I was right, my BF F6 does have ford badges.

Anyway, tough question so I am going to define my reasoning before I take the plunge. I am going to separate it into one model from each decade with only the best from each due to the evolution of styling that have occurred over the lifespan of Falcon. I also consider any car that has the Falcon body, despite badge engineering as eligible, as far as I am concerned Fairlane is out because not many body panels are interchangeable with Falcon.

So my list.

60's = XP hard top
70's = XB GT Coupe
80's = XE ESP (not a good decade really)
90's = EL GT
2000's = BF FPV (love elements of a both F6 and GT/GT-P), can't split them.
2010's = too early yet, lets see what comes up in the next 9 years but FG XR8 leads the way so far.

My list of the worst of all time.

AU, all of them but the later XR's and T series scrubbed up ok. To me the styling was influenced too much by the over styled and excessively ovalised Taurus.
EA, hated it the first day I saw it and it gave the impression it was rushed into production to beat the new commodore in so many ways.
XD, a victim of the decade with bland boxy styling hence my previous comment on the XE ESP.

Anyway, they are my opinions and many will disagree but that is all good, that is what makes us all individuals.

Usually Ford get it really right (styling, refinement, bugs ironed out, etc) with the last version of the series.

Thus for me:
XY - Phase 3
XC - GXL (a masterpiece)
XF - Ghia
EL - XR6/8 + kit
AUIII - XR6/XR8 (I really liked the look of mine for the record)
BFII -Ghia looked tops

As much as I like my FG, history shows there will be better to come from this series.

Quoted for truth, except I'd put them all as 1

Following that, I'd say the XR-XT was the next best.
