From what I've been told in the last few days it seems that tuning the new 6.4 SRT's is not available yet unless you change the ECU with an older unit. The coding set by Chrylser has yet to be cracked and no solution looks to be close.

Understandably not many people purchasing these cars would be looking to tune.

Imagine what you could do with 6.4 litres of HEMI.... :-) What sort of compression ratio do they run?

Better or worse than the fg glovebox? That's one of my pet hates with my fg is the distinct impression the glovebox and fuse box cover are made from barely recycled ice cream container lids... In hot weather my fg glovebox seems to warp more every day.

It's been 12 months in the States and still no luck with the tuning. Apparently Chrysler has gone all out with a military coding that is proving almost impossible to get past.

I know the SRT8 jeep can be tuned to point (torque tags, turn off the cylinder deactivation, rev limit, etc), so perhaps the 300C might be the same.
SRT engineers, in a engineer chat on the Jeep forum, themselves have strongly hinted at something being available soon for the 6.4lt..

Felt slightly lighter to me.

Compression Ratio 10.9:1

Good review which gives an insight into the suspension kit used and how it performs on the track.

Must admitt I'm finding it really hard to get this car out of my head.

Low enough for a little bit of boost then.

For sure it won't be able to have too much boost, just a whif if needed by those that need such things. But our 5.0 in standard form doesn't even get 6lbs boost does it?

11:1 isn't all that high with modern cylinder head technology with their vastly better combustion chamber shaping, ignition and swirl effect lets them get away with comp' unthinkable by old tech motors.

Check your boost guage when under full throttle or high load. GS is under 6 pounds, 335's should read half or very slightly over half a bar, just over 8 lb's stock, that's what mine reads anyways.

On another subject, wonder who will be first to test drive the V6 with the 8 speed ZF, bags someone else does this and writes the review, i'm too scared to go to the dealership again in case I lose what little self control I have left and do something financially silly.

Trying my best to keep my cars longer these days as first year depreciation is the real belter, whereas second and thrid years are quite tame by comparison.

Not really, for an iron block pushrod engine with no VCT. Its probably getting close to its limits as it is. All alloy motors with VCT can handle higher compression and more boost by the ability of the variable cam timing to change the timing to suit, and the better thermal properties of alloy blocks????

Big write-up in the Herald here on the weekend about Chrysler and its eight and nine speed transmissions.

Quote:
Eight speed transmissions will spread throughout Chrysler's lineup beginning later this year, said Mircea Gradu, the company's vice president of transmission, powertrain and driveline engineering.
The nine speed is being developed in conjunction with ZF Sachs and will be applied to front wheel drive vehicles in the group in due course.

BTW I found out the SRT8 is not speed limited like FPV and HSV to 250 k.p.h., in fact its not speed restricted at all. Top speed is apparently 175 m.p.h. that's 282 k.p.h. I guess it will be even faster with the new transmission

Not necessarily, the top gears are overdrives anyway, so it will probably max out in 5th or 6th. Just adding gears won't make it go faster if the car can't make more power to overcome the aero holding the car back from going any faster, if the 282 limit is a result of aero and not the rev limiter in top gear.

I agree. The article went on to explain that even though ZF claim a 14% improvement in fuel economy 8 speed compared to 5 speed box, (which on the face of it seems like a bold claim), Chrysler had actually experienced a 15% improvement with the 300 product. Extrapolating that to the SRT8, we'd see 11.1 L/100 km's, (compares very favourably indeed with a SC FPV at 13.7 L/100 km's). (Yet another way the tech in an SRT8 will make the SC FPV look outdated). I speculate it'll be available to order here as a 2014 model from about this time next year, for delivery mid-late spring 2013.

Yeah I really am thinking next time I change it'll be into something different and it could well be into the SRT8. There's too many cars in my sig from the same manufacturer and to be honest after driving the SRT8 I'm all done with making excuses for FPV's lack of advanced technology. They either give me the stuff I want, (e.g. a proper premium sound system, adaptive suspension, adaptive cruise control e.t.c. in the forthcoming 2014 model)...or I'll call time's up on FPV ownership.

Boss XR8 - Know where you're coming from and agree both 7th and 8th are overdrives, the latter heavily over-driven but the bottom line is the ZF is a more efficient box at power transmission with better lock-up so a bit more power will get to the rear wheels and I think we could see a slight increase in that 282 k.p.h. top speed. Wicked !!

Test drove the new one m8? I'm with ya on the fruit I mean a top of the range GT ect could at least go a Bose system if they can put them in mazda6 lux(mrs car) ford fpv should use Bose..

Can't wait to test drive one of these panthers and then the new srt8..

Yeap, I was working on a clients books today and he bought a demo Mazda CX7recently for $30,500 Kiwi = $23,500 Aussie and it comes standard with leather and Bose sound and a bunch of other stuff. I pay three times the price and miss out on proper premium sound, (not even a reverse camera in my MK1 SC FPV GT-P for goodness bloody sake), that was an additional cost option that if I had wanted would have resulted in a six month wait for delivery of a new vehicle...., and yet a reverse camera is standard fit on a G6E go figure, its just bizarre... Can you see me shaking my head in disbelief...Crazy small mindedness like that is where FPV leave themselves wide open for the seeds of discontent to fester and grow.

Just cause something has Bose sound does not mean it is good

While some of the gear is ok (still poor value against rivals) they have some low end offerings too. I am sure car makers use it cause of the name.

Some of their (home) equipment is amognst the most overrated of consumer products available (maybe Tag watches??)

Just goes to show marketing works!

Edit: not doubt it is nowhere near as horrible as FPV sound still, just I wouldn't go nuts for Bose without listening first

Spot on!

Bose is the "best" marketed audio brand in the world.

Sound is volume and movement of air. And when it comes to speakers in the home audio side especially they handicap themselves with small satellite speakers, give me traditional a/b configuration speakers any day.

^^ Agree with the above audio comments BUT at least HSV are making an effort to fit something better than very ordinary stereo's to their cars and have been doing so for many years now, yet FPV continue to fit very average stereo systems to their cars for so many years now and have made no effort to improve, go figure ?

Big Bowers and Wilkens fan here and would love to have a B&W system in my car, unfortunatly that's the preserve of the Jaguar XFR...

Anyway audio is just one example of what I consider to be a more systemic issue affecting FPV vehicles. FPV's have slipped further and further behind a range of other technologies available in other high performance cars since I've begun driving them in 2007. The SRT8 drive shone the spotlight on that, but its not the only example ou there by any means. Quite why Ford America have handicapped Ford Aust by not allowing access to latest technology is a mystery to me but the end result is FPV vehicles are less attractive to me than they once were and by a considerable margin. Their core DNA seems to be to deliver cars that go, handle and brake well, and that's been fine for me for the last five years but that's where their entire focus appears to continue to be, so it appears almost inevitable that my taste and what FPV can deliver are on divergant path's.

I guess I've lost confidence that FPV will be able to supply cars with the latest technology in the forseeable future. It appears those wanting high tech to go with high performance have to look elsewhere. Makes me a bit sad to say that, but that's how the landscape looks from where I sit. Maybe there will be a fair bit of new tech with the 2014 update but I honestly think they have very little money for new features and with a stretched and very limited R&D budget, so regrettably my perception is that FPV will gradually be getting further and further behind on the technology front. Doesn't in any way whatsoever please me to say that. Anyone loooking for a high tech car to go with their urge for high performacne needn't bother looking any further than the SRT8.
I predict significant market share loss for FPV and HSV as a result of this car.

Hi Rodge,

You're not the only one. My thoughts are along the exact same line.

I think I'm probably the odd one out here but the last thing I look for in a car is the stereo! To me it's the whole package & thats what FPV offers that really interests me.
Mind blowing performance that is very easily tuned for few dollars, six speed manual gearbox, racecar looks & a car I could drive to church on sundays.
If the Chrysler offers that than I guess I would interested in a few years, but atm my 335 GTP ticks all the boxs plus more that I look for in a high performance car!

To each his own I guess and as long as one is happy with his choice I think is all that matters.

Spoilt for choice I reckon.

Cheers
