They do swap between a 5 carriage set during the week and a 6 carriage set on weekends and some holidays but that 6th carriage uses up so much more fuel.

Our second last return saw us standing on Junee station in 38 deg temps, watching our train depart for the roundhouse to fill up, we were in serious danger of running dry around Culcairn otherwise.

My other 6 carriage experience was outside Moss Vale station waiting on a Railcorp diesel to pull us in the rest of the way, then finding out the diesel didn't have the right couplings.

Why I try to avoid weekend and public holiday travel aboard it.

Bring back the Fly.

Wow
They had to coal and water the XPT at Junee
Really.............................

Surely those XPTrigs have enough fuel capacity to do Syd/Melb

Or its a case of the motors being that tired they use exessive fuel

QR with their diesel hauled passengers seem to run two locos a lot of the time ha ha for cover if one breaks I guess.

Coal and water!

Made me think instantly of this tune:

They need to get everyone off to fuel up for safety reasons. That particular XPT was a last minute replacement for a downed Melbourne service at their depot, they made the decision to use the overnight from Brisbane which had arrived 1 hour earlier to do a turn and burn.
In hindsight the controller woman in charge of the train made a bad choice.

The XPT's have 2 power diesels one front one back but they blow more black smoke than a 2 stroke Detroit working Skyline.
They use lots of fuel crossing the Great Dividing Range twice, Bethungra loop and several large grades on that one journey which includes much higher speeds.

This is what happened on the Moss Vale breakdown, we lost the pusher diesel around Illabo and it had to struggle up over 2 ranges before running out of fuel just outside MV.
Ended up getting into $ydney at midnight instead of 8pm.

Funny the Grafton XPT regularly uses 6 carriages and sometime 7 on long weekends but travels at a more stately speed once past Maitland.

Freight only. I hope this never happens here. We bitch and scream about the trains but I always enjoy the journey's and people we meet aboard.

I did indeed make it to Cootamundra behind the 59 class but i didn't really go much past the passenger station precinct. Our trip was somewhat delayed on the return back to Junee as the 59 on the way to Cootamundra set the grass in one section alight

Fifteen cars
Fifteen restless passengers
Three conductors
25 sacks of mail
Love that song

This train has got the disappearing railroad blues

And that unfortunately is the reason diesels are used on Summer runs these days.

The Maldon to Castlemaine line was only steam for a long time, now they use a diesel to pull the tourist train in hotter weather if any of you get a chance to ride it.

Was it 5917 you were on ?

Been wanting to travel on one of Seymour's heritage fleet trains doing the dinner mini tour.

https://srhc.org.au/tours/

This one runs out to Tocumwal and returns the next day.

Often see their tour trains running the northern main line.

Yes it was the engine on that trip picnic train from Junee to Cootamundra and return.
I've been to the VGR on a few occasions and travelled the line from Castlemaine to Maldon for the Maldon street festival behind the J class which was pretty good as we don't see oil burning action here in South Oz.

Very reasonable prices.
Also is that a preserved disused signal box in your photo?

Sorry only just noticed the question.

Sort of yes. Violet Town signal box left as was. 1986 Calendar still on the wall local friends of the station group look after the platform.
