Default Toyota/TRD factory backed drag car

Yesterday at the Winternationals Tony Wedlock and a few other important people unveiled the new Toyota backed Ultimate Motorsports race car

Toyota put on a classy but not showy 5 minute media do.

A few pics

Now while a few will say, it isn't a Toyota blah blah.. Just to point out

Toyota brought a few other race cars, the Bates rally car
was one
iirc. They had a marquee set in prime position at the front of the pits paddock. The general manager of Willowbank Raceway introduced the Toyota Motorsport big wig and he delivered a quick blurb on Toyotas' race heritage and their enthusiasm to be part of the Ultimate Raceteam and drag racing in Australia. He also informed us of the commitment of Toyota to push the TRD performance brand name.

The car itself is awesome, but it uses the 2J2 3.2ltr block and
cyl head. Aftermarket rods and pistons etc and can push that beast to a sub 6.5 sec 1/4 mile @ 220+mph. All backed with the trusty Ford 9" diff
The car has something like 1300rwkw and cuts 0-100 in less than 1 second.

Hats off to Toyota, a real marketing winner to advertise the TRD performance branding to 40 000 people

Good to see a manufacturer remembering there are motorsport fans (and car buyers) outside of V8 Supercars.

Good work Toyota

spoke to a mate of mine (who lives and breathes Toyota) this morning about this. He told me that Toyota have announced a deal with Subaru to supply a rear wheel drive chassis as Toyota have dumped all of their own, and they will build a new rear wheel drive Sprinter or GT4 Celica. Awesome that TRD back a car ^^^ like this, which is 20 years old, and is still on top of the pile.
Apparently he told me there are 5 categories of motorsport that Toyota are involved in. Considering Toyota's marketing and building cars to suit fuel-wise, environment-friendly families and companies, makes me wonder how much longer they will be in F1. When they can spend a fraction of their budget in F1 on all the other categories of racing, and appeal to a wider range of people.

And besides, if this car opens the sport up to more people, how can it be a bad thing.

just my 2c worth

What in the hell kind of Toyota looks like that though?
I think in the background thats the Bates ARC corolla, and the Bates Targa Tassie IS200.

Now that Toyota Have a Nascar spec pushrod v8, and both the Fords and Holdens no-longer have factory floorpans, I wonder how long till we see them break into Avesco...

Toyota have made some of my favourite cars in the past..It is good the Australian arm getting a bit more sports orientated..competition only improves everyones products

I had a look at this car in person. Is very well presented and has some nice gear on it aswell. Tony Wedlock is no mug when it comes to drag racing, and with Bruce Agate aka Gonzo, this car will certainly put the cat amonst the pidgeons so to speak.

Wow, When I started reading this I thought it was just a 'bought' car with Toyota Paint job.
But then to see it is actually Toyota powered, is very impressive.great to see another manufacturer in the ring.

Not for much longer the word is with the growing class of what they call Sport Compact class and successful meetings at WSID, Brett Stevens (the boss) will be building an FG Ford Ute, powered by our own Aussie in-line 6 turbo motor, resin filled block with custom crank...They were talking 7 sec passes maybe work towards lower ET.
The car is half built already, and will running in a Pro/R exhibition at WSID featuring up to 5 cars from the USA, with one coming from Puerto Rico and 2 cars from New Zealand 300ZX with a V6 VG30 engine.

For many years Tony Wedlock raced the pro stock circuit this was real change of direction for his racing for his team...

Looks good with the new Aurion front on it. Makes it more of an Australian car than when it first arrived.

Wedlock is trying to get a new Pro FX class up and running. There were two cars there to do exhibition runs, Wedlocks car and the Ray Glass car from NZ.
The TRD car never got down the track with a decent pass and the other did a best of 7.3 or 4 from memory. It must have been very disappointing for Toyota after the big build up. They even canned the celebrity race they had planned.
When we got there on the Wednesday night Wedlock told our team owner to get out of rotaries as they will not be competitive in his Pro FX class.
He refused the offer to run the NZ car against our car after they were left to do solos.
The comments made when we arrived have fired up the PAC team to get even more out of the 20B rotary which is currently doing consistant 6.8 - 6.9's in a car they built from scratch 5 years ago. No need for a 2JZ here.

And the body is also an NHRA spec one, much the same as the Pro Stock Cobalts, GTO's and Mustangs. Hence the fully laid back body lines.

Toyota are fantastic marketers. The best and the brightest.

There strategy for years has been to to not take on the majors head on, but to use patience and fill all the niches. Surround them and then walk in. (no V8 supercars) It took them 30 years to finally have a crack at the aussie 6 market. An whilst he aurion is crap compared to a falcon or even a commonwhore. that was there last market segement.

Start with Corolla & Land Cruiser and finish up 30 years later with 20% market share. Clear # 1. The only thing we can gain from theis is Eji Toyoda went to Detriot in the late 40's to see how FoMoCo did it, copied the principles and seems to have made a go of it. Pity the FoMoCo don't anymore

Whilst I bleed blue even I have to concede that this level of manufacturer support is good for the sport. They Will be successful one way or another sooner or later...

Now, if only it could run in Melbourne......

That is very exciting. Since Nizpro showcased that 1000hp 4.0 I wondered when something like it would be used in a real drag car.

Considering the yanks are into the 8s with 2jz powered true street cars, i always thought the 4.0litre motors would do well.

Interesting times.

Good to see top level drag racing is keeping it relevant with easily Identifiable locally available body styles...
I initially thought someone had slapped a toyota whatever nose onto a couple of year old cougar.
