Kid needs help with painting callipers and rotors

Hey all!

I am looking for someone that can give me a hand with painting my rotors and brake calipars on my AU Falcon.

It's my first car, and I am wanting to get it done before I put on my BA XR rims.
( and thats when I can afford 4 new tires haha )

I am from around the Frankston area, and if no one can physically help, I'll try doing it myself from thread posts - the reason I dont want to do that first up, is the fact I am worried i'll wreck everything haha-

Help would be greatly appreciated!

Calipars are easy to paint and a great place to start. Just get some craft paper or newspaper and mask off well to prevent any over spray. Clean the brakes well with a good quality grease and tar remover and a stiff bristle brush. Give them a light sand and spray your paint on as even as you can. Dont go nuts with the first coat, do a few light coats instead of 1 or two heavy ones. Prep is the most important step, dont rush masking and cleaning as it will ruin the job.

How do I go about the rotors?

Just cover the rotors with a plastic bag. As been stated before take your time and get the prep done. Here is a picture when I did mine on my BA ute.

If you want to do the center part of the rotor just clean it, mask up and paint away. try not to get paint any part that is used for braking (shiney part). Also if you can get it off all four wheels its makes it quicker and easier. What colour you looking at doing them, red im guessing. I've always liked blue, orange or black brake calipers myself. Ohh and make sure you get high temp paint.

Also if your gonna paint the center I'd suggest black or grey so not to draw attention away from the caliper.

Well I just want a clean look basically.
My car is red, I dont know if red calipers are "too much" . I might go for black calipers possibly

I think what I am confused with is the discs. So I'd probably give them a good clean to get what I am wanting to achieve.. not paint them... duh- idiot.

But yeah, I am thinking either black or red calipers.
About half way down looking at the BA XR rim, that is what I have, and I want to achieve this look, but the process seems way of my league.

No reason you cant do that as well. just take your time, I'd go black calipers I dont like red personally.

Yeah I am thinking black, or possibly a silver, but silver probaby wont go well.

I'd imagine silver wouldnt stay silver very long. Orange is always cool :P

Yeah, I like the "out there" of the orange, but in the colour scheme, so to speak, I dont think it has room for orange haha :P

i painted my rotor hats in high temp paint. Just cleaned the surface with some WD40 and a light scrub with some steel wool and sprayed it on. Considering it was painted over the rust it has lasted well. This picture is after a few months.

I have a mate with a black magna wagon with black wheels and black rotor hats. His calipers stood out so he sprayed them too. Looked good, very stealth.

Do you really need high temp paint on the calipers? I can see the rotors getting hot but the calipers?

Good to see someone starting at the bottom of the car
I sprayed mine with $3 Supercheap paint and that lasted about 2 years
dont worry too much about getting paint on the shiny part of the disc
as this will rub off in time
then I went the other way
I looked on Ebay and found plastic covers that covered the calipers
they looked like Brembos complete with the logo and brake line
$35 delivered I think they even give you a tube of some type of Arraldite
to glue them on with
they have been on there 2 years and they do stand out

Cant answer for sure, but probably not for every day driving.
I would assume that its a tougher paint than the elcheapo brands so may last longer and save you doing the job twice.

But if you drive hard you will know how hot things can get.

I have done some mountain driving tried using the gears as much as possible but the brakes got that hot that at the bottom i couldn't even touch my steel rear wheels my bare hands they where that hot!

Guess the hi temp paint might have not been affected in this case compared to standard paint, but its really all guess work.

Yeah I'm really thinking a nice black on the hats and calipers would pull it off nicely, stand out on the discs nicely.

Well they're stock, so I dont want people to have the "wannabe Brembos" look, and others have said that they can melt when worked hard.

But yeah, when I do it, I want to do it once, and do it right haha

Hey burso, I just did my calipers on my first car, Depending on how much you want to spend this kit is nice http://www.ppc.au.com/kits5.htm which you can order from seaford BODY SHOP PAINT SUPPLIES ( not to far from pearcedale ) , It comes with everything you need masking tape etc, and when I finished I had some of the rust preventative paint left which is fantastic (you can literally paint over the rust ) I used it to paint over the hats, no spray you use a foam brush so it won't get out of hand, If you don't trust yourself with a spray can like me hahaha

If you want to practice on something first, go to a wrecker and get some cheap disc and callipers. Who cares if they have seized or warped, they will be to practice.

they are now only $15 a set

I did this for the first time a few weeks ago. Its pretty easy.

Spray the discs in brake cleaner first (don't let it touch the rubber brake hoses), then use the wire brush to remove all the dirt and brake dust off the calliper. I then sanded it as the wire brush won't go everywhere. Then mask it all off, even the gaurds and bonnet/boot lid as I got a bit of overspray on mine by accident on one gaurd. Then I wiped them down with wax and grease remover.

Then sprayed 3 coats of calliper paint. Let dry then remove masking.

Turned out like this. I also painted the rotor centres as they were rusty as hell and you could see it through the wheels.

Hahaha, well it's a bit too much than what I had in mind, but Like xisled said, I'll go to the local wreckers and give them a go.

Hit autobarn/ supercheap or similar and you`ll see a brand called VHT, mostly spray packs. They have paints specifically for brakes in quite a few colors.

Same theory applies with prep etc. Take your time and they`ll come up a million bucks mate.
