hi

could be the switches on the sterring wheel getting jammed causing this in ur car, you might need to replace them, best thing is to visit your local ford dealer

cheers

Hi all,
I own a 2009 FG (G6) and am having similar problems with the radio controls on the steering wheel, when I press the volume down button on the steering wheel the volume goes up, when I press the volume up button it changes the radio stations, etc. This doesn't happen all the time as sometimes all the controls works perfect.
The buttons don't appear to be sticking so not sure why this is happening.

Regards,
Al

Hi,
I have a 2008 FG XR6, same problem with my steering controls. Cruise control only works intermittently, phone button changes the radio station and the volume controls redial the last number on my mobile phone. Just out of warranty, so I suspect I'll have to replace them.

Hi Guys, I have an FG 2008 with the same problem. A guy at my work with the same car also has the same issue. I rang the dealer where I bought the car. They tole me "never had that problem, have no idea what it could be". They offered to search for the issue. Allow $130/h. I dont like to take the car to a place where they have no idea what to look for and then you pay $400 with no result? Might have to call a few dealers. Someone surely must have been able to fix this problem. Does anyone know?
Cheers

Fadi, Can I retrofit the FG Bluetooth kit from an FG into a BF?

Swap the steering wheel and roof module?

Not sure if the other controls would plug in and work.

Yeah, it's frustrating, i called a few ford dealerships and none of them would even discuss it over the phone, they just wanted me to come in so they could run a diagnostic (and $140 per hour). The receptionist stated she had seen the problem several times but when talking to the workshop guys they just wouldn't admit that they had seen this problem or knew what it was, sounded a bit suspect so i just left it.

Mine appears to be a permanent problem so the 'new' button order doesn't change, i can live with this as the only functionality i've lost is volume down and can't justify $140 for a diagnostic then (probably) $100-400 to fix the problem. It's a shame Ford treat their customers this way, in such a competitive market you would think Ford would want good customer feedback, sales are slipping and i can guarantee it's not just about cheaper imports..

I had this same problem in my 2010 G6ET. Dealer changed the buttons and problem came back.
In the end I thought maybe they hadnt changed the buttons so I thought I would mark the buttons before I took it back for warranty replacement.
When I pulled the Steering wheel airbag assembly off I noticed the wiring to the buttons was just running freely across the steering wheel. I tucked it into the locating clips and put it back together.
Havent had a problem since (touch wood) and that was nearly 12 months ago??

I had mine fixed under warranty and the problem hasn't come back, hopefully it was just a one off. But I will keep the wiring in mind if it occurs again.

Have seen many a commodore and falcon with these issues. AFAIK the controls are resistance based.. Well they were on pervious models anyway. Different buttons provide different resistance values. Poor connections at the switch, bad clock spring etc. can all play a part as any resistance in a connector etc. will change the signal received and cause the track change on volume up etc.

Pulling my airbag out this weekend to inspect the button and clock spring connections

the results are in.. success!

Unfortunately didn't have my phone with me so wasn't able to provide pics. Removed the airbag thismorning and had a bit of a poke around with the multimeter. 0 varied resistance in the switches and harness so that ruled them out.

Disconnected the connector on the clock spring and bent the two pins for the switches ever so slightly to provide a better connection when plugged back together. Refitted all and hey presto! Just like a brand new one.

I also had a slight crackling through my speakers whenever I used the buttons. Looks like that's cleared up too.

I think there's a few threads on here on how to remove the steering wheel. I just remove the airbag fuse, but some prefer to disconnect the battery. After the horn pad is off it's really straight forward. Just make sure the wiring is routed as it was when you started. Hope this helps

Ford fixed mine yesterday - used the term 'fretting' (or something similar), but yes, I think they just cleaned and reattached the terminals.

FIXED
My Steering Audio buttons were going crazy, Seek = Pause, Vol+ = Mode and sometimes did not work. Removed Horn Cover (First disconnect Horn relay 7 and Airbag Fuse 3. I advise not to disconnect battery as in some cases the ICC bricks itself on battery reconnect, but if you have to disconnect make sure there is no USB plugged in on battery reconnect). I removed and plugged back in the Buttons plug under the horn cover about 10 times to remove any dirt or corrosion. Put everything back and it is now working as it should. :-)

This is still the case with the FG as I recall.

To try to explain this I have come up with this below as an example.

Button one is resistance 10
Button two is resistance 20
Button three is resistance 30
Button four is resistance 40
Button five is resistance 50.

So if you have a resistance on any of the other connections it will change the buttons. So lets say there is a 10 resistance in one of the other connectors.

So button one is now resistance 20 (10 + 10) so now working as button 2
Button two is now resistance 30 (20 + 10) so now working as button 3
Button three is now resistance 40 (30 + 10) so now working as button 4
Button four is now resistance 50 (40 + 10) so now working as button 5
Etc.

So if the buttons have changed around, the problem is likely with something other than the buttons themselves, so the steering wheel contact etc.
