Default Just how far can a Mazda 3 go without a service, 73,000km

My brother in law has a larger mechanical workshop and he had a woman come in with a rattling Mazda 3. It had run a big end bearing but to his shock the car hadn’t had an oil change since new which was 73,000 kilometres ago. He asked if she had ever had it serviced and the answer was no I brought it new, then went off about this shouldn’t happen to a new car and was annoyed that it was out of warranty and the Mazda dealer service wouldn’t help her.

*tongue in cheek* Should never let women drive anyway...

Apparently maintenance is an optional extra in all these new fandangle cars...so many electronic thingamagiggies they should service themselves and change the oil...

50,000 on a nissan murano that now needs rings, I guess the oil light was a sign on accomplishment

and iv seen a camry with 70,000 that all the oil turned to sludge and lived in the rocker overs, never had a service since left the factory. 1.5 years old.
even if you take every service cost up to 70,000 still dosnt equal an engine. Happens more than you think it possibly could

Saw a current model Corolla driving down the street the other week blowing blue smoke like a 2.6 Magna. This is probably more common than you think.

Done 2 of these mazdas now, saved both with con rod bearings and cleaned out oil pick up, one only had 23K without an oil change. Both cars were saved by the way with only con rod bearings and oil pick up cleaned.

My friend's sister topped up the oil with water. In her defence, at least she tried.

What would the costs of servicing a Mazda 3 to 70000k's and the cost of an engine? I know the engine will be alot more but it would be interesting the difference

Are we talking about what normal people pay for servicing or mates rates like you pay?

Mazda service is about $500 every 6 months / 10000km. Over 70000km that would be about $3500. No idea what a new motor would be worth, but if the car wasnt serviced, I would also imagine that the rest of it was probably never looked after either, so resale on a car with zero service history and neglected would be shot to bits. not to mention that it would be a crab to drive.

on a related note, there is a car rental company in Perth that doesnt service their cars (mainly corollas) due to the fact that servicing them would cost him more than the occasional breakdown.

Don't laugh.... I worked at a discount store once and and one Thursday a lady asked me about the cordless (battery) drills we sold.....

She wanted the one that didn't need charging all the time, as in, you buy it charged and then you use it and never charge it again.

She had sworn she had seen them advertised somewhere, but couldn't really remember where. She wasn't joking either.

If buying a Corolla in Perth... avoid white ones with serial number etchings on the windows

Last night was at a workshop seen a Mercedes van that was used as a family van. The van has slotted disc, but the disc were so worn down you could just the very faint line where they used to have the slot marks.

crap what did the oil look like? I think everybody should have to learn basic auto maintenance at school. Some poor person is going to buy that car one day, if it still runs.

There has been a few Mazda 3's on the Mazda forums that have done a big end bearing. The thing in common with them? Poor maintainence.

Saw a Hyundai excel do 70,000km without a service before it seized like the Mazdurp shown here. Same stupid reasoning - female owner didn't think it needed a service
