octane booster to make up 98 RON

So tomorrow im heading off to melbourne from townsville, (weather permitting, we are flooding here right now) and was wondering if you can only get 95RON is it safe to use octane booster to make it up to 98? my car is tuned to 98.

been looking at nulon pro strength octane booster?

It will work ok on 95, the actual RON of petrol is all over the place depending on temperature, age and what it was mixed with when it was put in the tank. If you are worried just don't rev high or drive hard.

6 months ago, I went from S.A to Brissy and I could get 98 all the way. The car I used only got round about 400 K out of a full tank of fuel,(1976 model car, towing a box trailer) so I was stopping every 200 to 300 K (depending on distance to the next town and how I felt at the time). and filling up.

So I can't see you having a problem obtaining it especially if you're using a modern car, getting more mileage fom a tank of fuel.

The octane booster would be a good idea if your tuned for 98 and your going to push the car hard. If not it shouldn't be an issue.

there aint no 98 in central Australia mate. Ive just bought two bottles of the nulon stuff and it says it raises octane by 7 points. i'll just chuck a bottle of that in if i have to fill up with 95. it's only going to be an issue for about 800km of the trip the rest will be fine.

It will only be revving hard when overtaking, thanks for the info as i was a little worried

Driven Melbourne - Brisbane a number of times, and Brisbane Townsville/Cairns a number of times and never had any issues finding 98Ron.

Just fill up at major centres regardless of whether or not you need to and you should be right, worse case you've got the octane booster...

I too have found Nylon to be a good product.
Your concerns about the 98 fuel supply is the least of your problems at the present time. Road was cut south of Townsville today according to family. Before setting off, do a check on road conditions.

So what you're saying, all the major cities from Cairns downwards don't have 98. Find that one hard to believe.

I travelled through Central NSW and found it at all major centres. These places included Hay, West Wylong, Forbes, Parkes, Moree, just to name a few and got it all the way.

I'm thinking because he said central he must be going inland a bit first.

My father did Katherine NT to Lismore NSW, through the middle of Aus and said a lot of the petrol stations didn't even have 95, and with his car he wouldn't ever go under 95 and very extreme cases he'd put 95 in.

The Nulon stuff is very good but don't use it all the time as it will foul your spark plugs in a hurry.

Occasional use only.

Nulon octane pro booster will take 91 octane up to 97 octane when mixed at the correct ratio. It only fouls spark plugs when us to much nulon in the fuel to booster ratio if you use correct ratio spark plug fouling is not a problem.

What it does encourage is tracking on the sparkplug.

I just clean mine every 5k in the glass machine.

My only concern is WHEN you would be travelling. I did a quickie from Bris to Muswelbrooke, and I could fine heaps of 98RON, but non of the servo's were open as I travelle through the night. I ended up putting in 95 somewhere, and done what you said, used octane booster and it went fine.
