I own a Mark 1 Escort. This vehicle was originally fitted with a 1300cc engine but now has a 2000cc Escort engine. The brakes have been upgraded to suite this new engine. We have fitted an RS2000 master cylinder Capri 9.6" front discs and 1600 twin cam 9" rear drums. The original booster is fitted to the vehicle. The brake shoes and pads are all new and the brakes have been bled. The car stops very well, however the problem is that the brake pedal must be pushed down to about 50mm off the floor before the brakes lock up.
Can anyone suggest what I should be looking for or how to fix this problem? |

I had the same problem with mine. Reblead the rears again and pump through a whole container or 1 litre this may fix the sponge. Also have you adjusted the rear drum brakes so they sit tight in the drum

If the problem persists, after the brake system has been effectively bled and the rear brake shoes are correctly adjusted, then you may have fitted a master cylinder with too small a bore size. Did you carry out hydraulic computations before the selection of components? Drop me a line if you need any help. Regards Wayne |
