Default Unloved windsor

My poor forte must have been severely neglected before i got it coz the oil pressure is a little lower than standard and i just cant get rid of the bloody engine noises. I put nulon worn engine treatment in it when it gets serviced[every 2-3000 km] and less than 1000 ks after the service its noisy again , it is only noisy for the first coupla minutes or so then it quietens down.Doesnt burn any oil at all and goes really well apart from the noise[ it almost sounds like piston slap]any ideas or anyone else have a noisy v8 :

Shes done 163000 and i use a shell 20 50 with nulon worn engine treatment. If i dont put the treatment in it when i service it , it is heaps noisier. It doesnt sounds like a lifter ticking it sounds more like a knocking but it does go away unlike worn bearing knocking. In saying that do roller lifters sound different when they are worn out as compared to a flat tappet hydraulic lifters? Im almost certain 175kw dont come with roller rockers. Is it common for the roller lifters to die. Also i have tried a coupla different kinds of oil but shell seemed to quieten it down most.

Try a thinner oil 15W50 to get it flowing faster at the start up and the 50 weight will be good when it is hot
Or give it a good flush - get it hot and drop in about 1/2 to 3/4 of a litre of kero and run it at a fast idle rev 1500rpm for a few minutes to get it circulating and drop the oil stright away fill it with cheap oil and a cheap filter run it for a week (a few hundred klms) and do it again with the kero and then fill it with the good stuff or if it drops back out as black as tar do the kero again with cheap oil. This frees up the oil galleries and removes a lot of the old caked on oil in the internals if the old girl was neglected as you said
I did this with the old XE a few times and it stopped blowing smoke on start up and rattleing when cold. I used the cheap supercheap own brand oil $7 for 5 litres and a supercheap oil filter at $3 , done this over 3 week ends

Being a 175kw it wont have the roller rockers fitted although this isnt your problem, Im leaning more towards a piston knock/collapsed skirt, if this is it then the engine when cold will knock for around 1-5mins depending on how bad it is and once its up to normal opp temp it will not be heard as the piston has expanded enough to stop slapping, an easy way to determine if its this is too when cold and off undo all the leads at coilpack end and leave them semi-clicked in, start it and then carefully with some rubber or something take one off at a time and the noisey cylinder will stop knocking once you take the lead off that cyl as it will just be a lasy cyl and not fire causing it not to rattle.

When i pulled a (new) motor down at work that i was using for my 5L and measured the piston to bore clearance i found a hefty 0.0035" for a brand new engine and running a cast/hyper piston, now you do the math it wont take much for one to collapse if been hot or treated bad and start to knock.

Hope this isn't your problem.

Shaun

Geez shaun i think you might have it, i hate to say it but it sounds scary and true. I have tried thinner oil i think it was the shell semi synthetic but she just got real noisy., i heard that the last of the windsors that were imported into australia, some of them sat around for ages and thats not good for a new motor.Either way its something im used to now, i dont like it but i cant afford to rebuild it. Thanx for all the info shaun

Not a problem, but do try the lead idea i suggested, it may or may not be the problem but im about 90% sure it is. Have you tried the Castrol 25w50 for big bore street machines, it may help with the worn treatment aswell but maybe the lucas oils treatment.

25/50 eh. Might have to give it a crack because the au,s only going about 2000 or less ks and its noisy again and time for a service, bloody people who dont service their car regularly need a good slap : Oh well P.S im not real keen to find out which pot is the dud one because i will worry about it too much and i dont have the cash to give it a freshen up, but i think you are 100% right shaun

Huh? Why would they build 175kw engines without rollers and 185kw Tickfords (S1 XR8) with rollers???

AU1 XR8's didn't come with roller rockers either.

You mean rockers right? Because all since the EB, had (hydraulic) roller lifters...
