 Now tell me if you knew previously cars had an arrow telling you which side the fuel filler was on. I bet there's been quite a few people here who have been in fleet/borrowed/rental cars before and pulled up to the servo and not known which side of the bowser to pull up at and didn't find out until they physically looked.

If an arrow is not there, most cars show which side by the nozzel on the symbol ..... just a bit more trivia ....

I love the dash of the Festiva... has this sign at the base of the dash face:
<------- Fuel tank (or something like that) Has been almost a yr since I have had the Festiva. Will check my other cars as I was just talking about this with the GF and I think her Mirage goes against this rule? |

There was a theory years ago that whatever side of the dash the gauge was one, that was the side your filler was on too.
Dunno what you do if the gauge is in the middle like some euros?

Plenty of cars don't follow this 'rule' though. I remember ages ago there was a thread about it.

The location of the guage and the handle is all a myth. I drive 20+ vehicles a week and this doesnt ring true in most of them. The arrow is in most however.
EF/EL is the only car I know that actually says '<------Fuel Door' (apart from the Festiva as mentioned above)

Heaps of my cars have had that fuel door arrow symbol. I first noticed it in my 94 Laser. Also, most of the time (not all though).. the fuel flap will usually be on the opposite side of the car to the exhaust pipe (except for dual exhaust systems :P) I know that might be useless info but just thought I'd put it out there anyway.

I first noticed this 5yrs ago when i got my EL XR6. Pretty cool idea, except when you go to fill up a car that doesn't have one, you really miss it.

As others have said, the EL one (I think EF is in the same place too)
is quite easy to see.

to me - the more logical position is actually drivers side (ie:commodore)
mainly because of convenience to the driver - who is always going to be present at the petrol bowser... if its on the driver's side you don't have to walk as far (maybe its a LAZY american concept??)

I actually heard that whatever side the hose appeared on the pump symbol was in fact the side that the fuel filler was on. Some cars went a step further and added an arrow.
But.... The mercedes Sprint van we had at work (traded for Ford transit recently) is the only vehicle I have driven to date that has not been correct. It had the hose on the drivers side but the fuel filler was on the passenger side. You had to open the passenger door to open the fuel flap. Actually I just went out to check the FG, it has the hose on the drivers side BUT has an arrow pointing (and on) the passenger side. Guess that blows my theory! Wade |

Its good to have Holden have it on one side and Falcon on the other, the other vehicles also mixed, so when you pull up at the servo there is an even chance of a vacant pump on the side you want.
I liked the older cars where the filler was at the back so it didnt matter which side the pump was on. But the indication in the instrument panel? That is old news.... |

Yeah I have found over the years that Falcons and Jap cars (ie naturally RHD) have the fuel filler on the passengers side, and Commodores and German cars (ie naturally LHD) have the fuel filler on the driver's side. For me, this is yet another reason to prefer a Falcon over a Commodore as I can pull up at the bowser and actually open my door fully!

any way LHD or RHD doesnt seem to make a difference I know Commodores were designed in Germany a LHD country and Falcons were designed LHD in the USA so there goes that argument also early Explorers had the cap on the left side and later ones on the right side so go figure also what about XD/Fs it was in the middle my Thunderbirds cap is on the left hand side (drivers side) John |
