I was more thinking if there was a later model telstar that had a better fan setup and bigger output current alterator, that can be fitted to my 87 telstar.

Also if anyone has or knows of someone with a 86/87 telstar that has cruise control, electric windows and the cluster that has the tacho on it, and they aren't using it or want to wreck it i really want these parts. I have been searching for them for a long time now and will pay well and have no problem paying postage, or if they are close(SE Queensland) removing the parts. thanks

[QUOTE=shiftybugger]I recently bought an 85 AR Telstar (TX5, 2.0L, Manual) and I have a few questions:

1. Is it made for leaded fuel? but will run on unleaded with lead additive
you may need to retard the timing a fraction

2 are the vaccume dashpots working on the carby ?

all done and good
- Plugs - all clean
- Leads, distributor - all appear to be in good nick
- Air filter - fairly clean, not far off new
- Carby - only a cursory check, fuel level in the clear window is good,

the AR head gasket or valve regrind set
should be a 2 ltr motor not
the 1.6 or 1.8 those motors may be in the lasers

Im new to this site... I have a Telstar TX5 ghia... it was built in december 87 but released in 88... I had to replace the gasket between the manifold and the block but it still sounds as tho it is leaking??? also the car idles at around 1500 - 2000rpm in park and nutural but when put into reverse it drops back to around 1000rpm, then tonight i took it for a run up and down the street and when i got back i put it in nutural and the revs built up to 200rmp then dropped back to 1000rpm then back to 2000rpm etc etc, it takes about 5 seconds to get from 1000 - 2000, does any one know wat could be wrong? it is a 2.2L injected automatic.

just wondering if you would have a pic of the layout of the underdash fuse box as my parker lights and instrument cluster are not working... i have found a blown fuse and replaced it but it blew again i want to make sure it is the parker light fuse... also would you have the scamatic diagram of the parkerlight setup so i can trace the wires if that is the case, cheers.

i really just need the layout of the fuse box so that i know what each fuse is for and what size fuse should be in there, i would imagine that the carby one would be similar to the EFI one

I know you are talking about the earlier model but I am trying to get hold of the wiring diagrams etc for an AX tx5 1992 v6. The ones I have in the Haynes book are wrong. Any ideas?

Thanks

Default timing belt teeth?

I have an AS (1985) telstar tx5 with AR (mazda FE) engine fitted. not knowing the full engine history, I'm changing the timing belt, but there appears (at least in the gates catalogue) to be two with the correct tooth shape ("square" / trapezoidal) and width (19mm) - 106 teeth (gates T077 dayco 94085) or 109 teeth (gates t088 dayco 94096, dayco kit KTBA146). the gates catalogue lists both, while the dayco guide doesn't list the 106 teeth as applying to this model, so erring towards the 109 teeth. but can anyone confirm the expected number of teeth? (preferably without counting!)

Default telstar roof leaking ?

My daughter as a 1959 Telstar. I have tried lifting the windscreen rubber and applying silicon sealer and leaving a bead of sealer on the outside of the rubber.
After a shower of rain the passenger seat is quite wet.
I cannot see where the water is coming in
Any Ideas

regards

the outer door rubber seal at closure
there may be a gap at the chassis

there might be a rust spot further along
the windscreen

other option is to get a professional
replace the rubber seal

not sure if this is still monitored? anyway, my 1985 tx5 ghia, with FE engine, died suddenly while doing approx 90km/h on a qld summer day. having had issues which I believe are early head problems, got it towed home and left it to think about what it had done. convinced myself i should check it out. It seems to have no spark (using plugs from car - so not absolutely certain they are good, but figure they can't all fail at once) from either side of distributor, and checking resistance between centre and spade terminals of ignition coil gives about 7k ohm. between two spade terminals, just slightly > 0 - is this coil bad or could it be something else? don't want to just throw parts at it given age / potential head issues, but no spark i thought should be generally quick / inexpensive on the vintage of car

another bump
the misses and i are going to look at a 85 telstar ghia with 93 tho on the clock with the owners books
i know nothing about these cars, nothing apart from the similarity to the early mazda 626's
anyway for 700 bucks it looks pretty clean in the two exterior photos on gumtree

if it runs ok and is nt blowing a cloud of smoke and idles fine and most of everything inside works might be a good chance we'll grab it
who knows
its only 50 mins away and its a nice day for a drive

its white, auto, 4 door, ghia and has a towbar lol
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/felix...985/1035113955

would be perfect for the misses to drive the 30 odd kms round trip for work daily

SO WE HAD A QUICK DRIVE OF THE LITTLE GHIA
LOOK FOR 600 COINS (WHAT HE SAID HE WOULD LET IT GO FOR) ITS NOT A BAD LITTLE RUNNER
ding in the rear qtr down the bottom another one up the front nothing overly stuffed but a decent scuff/ding
interior was dead stock still even the tape deck and was in good nick, few marks here and there but blimey what do you expect for something that old
looked reasonable under the hood
was only one prob
only prob was the digital speed fuel and temp gauge didnt work on the test drive
owner said it wouldnt work on a cold day when he nipped to the shops in it a few weeks ago but went out in it on one of the hot days we had last week and it started working

but still its just heresay huh
maybe it hasnt worked for ages?
didnt seem dodgey or full of **** but hey he needs it gone as it was sitting there taking up space
son had a blown something or other on a vectra and needed a runner while they dropped 2500coins on the vectra
now thats fixed he just needs it gone
steered fine stopped well accelerated fine

misses passsed (its for her anyway) as shes worried about that speedo
had a quick look around the dash for a fuse area but didnt see nothing

ok still have the repair manual 83 -87
just not the pictures up on photo tube and cant replace them

is this an unleaded model

first replace the timing belt what ever you do

speedo/instrument panel problems is the printed circuit and dry solder
you have to pull the instrument panel out and inspect and recheck circuits
copper contacts

if not a cable speedo operated then transducer at gear box

member vdo knows something about instrument problems
contact him by through the forum
active in the post classic forum this month jan 2014

you knowing mazdas should have no problem
anyway the mazda 626 of the same year
is exactly the same in every way specs /parts everything
just badging different

did a lot to one recently swap from 626 hatch to telstar sedan

head gasket blew because the thermostat had been put in backwards
the housing has eneough room to do this so be mind full
vrs kits are the same

the drive shafts you can just undo the circlip and refit the three bearing tree type on the same shaft that fits the ball bearing race
the gearbox input hubs are both the same specs
so refit the inner boot as normal
the cv outer splines are the same

any questions post again

What Do You Expect for peanuts , log books and warranty . 1985 you would not be considering Km just condition , and 600 bucks .
Meet the buyer from hell , now ready and willing to stuff you around . Plenty out there .
