Ford, Holden to maintain Aust operations

Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane says he has secured a commitment from car manufacturers in the United States that Ford and Holden will continue their current operations in Australia.

Ford and General Motors in the US have been hit by plummeting sales as consumers switch to smaller cars.

Mitsubishi is scaling back its manufacturing operations in Adelaide.

But Mr Macfarlane says the decline in sales of larger cars should not hit Holden and Ford plants in Australia.

"We were keen to see the fallout from that not impact on the Australian operations [and] as a result of the meetings we were able to get a clear commitment from both Ford and GM to their Australian operations," he said.

"We are very confident about continuing car operations and we made it clear of the mutual obligation we felt the parents of GM and Ford owed Australia, who were investing," he added.

"Australians are investing some $7.3 billion in the car industry over the current 15-year period. That point was well taken."

I find it very unlikely that Ford or Holden will ever close down their Australian operations. They may or may not scale it back like we are seeing with the VE Commodore.

A halving of tariffs in 2010 and a shrinking large car market compounded by no real export saviour don't necessarily augur well though in the long term.

I hope it never happens, it would truly suck to not have holdens and fords in Australia :
