It's really strange, because mine has all the indictations of a 220 (incl. build date), bar the different engine cover.

Engine covers are easy to change so I wouldnt be relying on it to determine whether it's a 200 or 220 spec engine.

it also had the alloy ford racing heads like the t series had not the iron gt40p heads. id say it was a left over t-series engine! |

How an alloy headed 220 motor sat around for over three months and then finally found its way into an XR8 is beyond me, especially since the T2's had been getting cast iron headed engines for that whole time. Possibly a T1 TS50 warranty engine that had been misplaced in the production line? Daniel |

Left over heads, warranty left overs and the like sounds the most plausible.

As b2tf said, engine covers tend to rub and get trashed easily, so it wouldn't be out of the question for it to have been replaced at some stage.

So what is the difference between the series 2 200kw abd 220kw motor? What is involved to produce the extra 20kw?
Would it put most people off buying a 200kw S2 rather than a 220kw S2? Surely an exhaust and few mods would see you past 220kw anyhow.

Some of the very first ones had pretty trick alloy ones I think, then they started making 'em out of steel, which added a bit more weight, but performance was the same. Yeah you can get past 220 no probs with an exhaust and stuff, but do the same mods to the 220 and you'll always be at least 20kw, if not more, ahead. The average punter may not care much about the difference but anyone who's into modding cars would want the 220 - it revs a bit smoother etc... |

I have recently purchased a 1999 AU Fairlane Ghia. 135,000km, 5L Windsor, LPG. I am considering putting an exhaust on it. Have read in this thread that a gain of around 10kw can be achieved via a twin exhaust. Is a twin the way to go or could I get a similar result from a larger single?

So did all XR's have GT40P heads? Was there a difference between the heads from Series 1 -3? Bigger valves etc?

Yes they all had GT40P heads, however, the 220kw Windsors got some massaging from Yella Terra.

Still, I (and a lot of others) would be interested to see what you base your statement on.
