It depends on what you're into. Being from G-town, you've probably already done the Great Ocean Road as mentioned. Bendigo or Ballarat aren't too bad if you're into historical sort of stuff, I found Shepparton to be pretty mediocre really, not much going on there.
Have you got a boat? Echuca/Moama/Cobram, anywhere along the Murray is great if you like to ski/fish, not quite a beach but still, something different. The Mildura/Sunraysia area is good if you're into wineries and citrus fruit, plus the Murray is very wide and deep up there, lots of good fishing to be done. But at that time of year it's gonna be blisteringly hot.

What about Eildon? Lake Eildon is the fullest it has been since 1996 at the moment. I'm thinking about heading up there for a day or two actually.

if you don't mind travelling a bit, what about Mallacoota near the NSW/VIC border?? It's a great drive and there's a camping park right on the beachfront.
CLICK HERE FOR MAP or even Cann River??

Head up to the Macedon Ranges if you like country areas, Mt Macedon is a good drive, very twisty road, best vanilla slice in Woodend, best beer there too with Holgate Brewery, which also does lunch. Their new Empress beer is great.
Its about 45 minutes from Melbourne. |

If the weather is warm enough, you could try Narrawong. They have a caravan park on the beach, right at the mouth of the Fitzroy River - Portland is about 15k's from the park, Warrnambool is about 45 minutes up the road. There's also a beach out of Portland, Bridgewater - there's a walk down there out to the seals, petrified forest, blow holes (not sure if they're active still, but a good walk).
If it's cold on the other hand, I'd steer well clear - those SW winds will rip straight through the kids... :( But fishing is awesome, will almost certainly catch yourself some decent flathead, and you can fish straight off the beach at Narrawong (might even catch yourself a shark if you've got a good surf rod).

Something about that area I love! |

If you want a beach you need to go somewhere other than Victoria :-)

Take a trip to where I live on the Mornington Peninsula!
Rosebud/McCrae are great places to stay, albeit it might be a tad busy during holiday season. You can camp on the foreshore and see a lot of great places like Arthurs seat, Gunnamatta back beach, Point Nepean, Kings falls and Kings creek, even catch the Ferry over to Queenscliff for a great day out! Also, the beaches are wonderful! It's weird talking about where I live in such high spirits, but it's a pretty good area for a cheap holiday! Last edited by |Nate; 07-09-2011 at 10:08 AM. Eden is also just before Merimbula and would also be worth considering. About 7 hours drive from Melbourne. Stop at Cann River for a toilet stop as there ain't much past there for a good while.

I've found that the words School Holidays and cheap are never seen in the same sentence.

Ocean Grove, Torquay/General Southwest area. Not much on the east side really, Phillip island and Inverloch is about it. Don't bother with wast PPB, the dredging has ruined the beaches.
Could maybe go down to Point Nepean and check out the old WW2 bunkers??? Not a beach but way better!!!
