Angry How many times . . . . . . .

do idiots need to be told to stay out of flood water - jesus, what is wrong with these people

Not just the tools that think they can get through, but tools in their 4x4's and trucks that think they are invincible and all they do is create waves into peoples homes and businesses - FFS, stay out

not only do they endanger their own life, but also the lives of those who then have to come to their rescue.

I put it down to the 4x4 mentality where they think they can go anywhere, especially seeing they have the mandatory snorkel fitted. But they under estimate the power of crossing flowing water and the fact their vehicle is likely to float. Three vehicles I saw on the news two days ago now in which the driver drowned, were all 4x4.

There was even footage of a 4x4 driver arguing with an SES officer that he could cross given the chance.

There is nothing wrong with going into flooded water, the thing is most people nowadays getting around driving 4X4 are not experienced with what they are doing. stupid is stupid does.

Oh I've got a 4 wheel drive, I can go anywhere, especially if it has a snorkel.

I see this a lot through work. It's amazing how many people think their Camry will be fine crossing a flooded road.

I once saw an incident with a Prime move with a trailer, failed really bad. Lost everything, PM, trailer and the load. All destroyed. That driver didn't remain employed for much longer. I have a picture somewhere of the driver sitting on the roof waiting to be rescued.

you just reminded me of that tool on 'Outback Trucker' that tried to cross a flooded creek, wasn't brave enough to drive in so he turned the rig around and backed in, I nearly fell off the couch laughing

even driving to the shops on sunday some people where flying into foot deep water and causing water onto oncoming cars windscreens, and for a second you just cant see through the windscreen, its just dump.

There was even footage of a 4x4 driver arguing with an SES officer that he could cross given the chance.
yeah if they float there stuffed. they just go to deep. it might be ok wading through a quiet deep creek/river with the doors open with a 4x4 and diesel etc. its a different story with a decent current . and a petrol is more likely to stop.

peoples bad judgment astounds me, if your,ve ever been in a rip at a beach you learn quick not to mess with mother nature.

darwin has been mentioned, natural selection with take out a lot of dummies.

Tell me about it! Damn city slickers wouldn't know the first thing about driving a car on anything but smooth bitumen. Can't count the number of times I've helped some fool in a FWD car get out of the flood plain that's outside my front gate.

I don't think they realise they could be killed! Stay in the big smoke if you can't drive your car!

I've crossed floodwaters when I shouldn't have. I was just lucky I had a lot of equipment to weigh me down enough to cross. Before you all tell me how stupid I was for doing it, I had good reason. I was carrying fire fighting pumps and a generator to my brothers house. If I hadn't of chanced it to get through they would have lost everything (not everything can be replaced). I was stuck at his house for three days before water had receded enough to get out. Was actually amazing to see people working together that usually wouldn't give 2 hoots.

I think the problem is that people have been conditioned to think they are safe here. Australia has some of the craziest weather and deadliest wildlife but because of our modern conveniences, people think they are safe to go wild here and emergency services will save them every time.

Few people are brought up with any real ability to be self sufficient any more. They don't actually know what to do when things go south nowadays.

Australian mentality:

My car has AEB, ABS, reverse camera, Airbags and I drive with my lights on.

I don't see why I can't cross this flooded road.....

What do the gov mean about flooded ? 1ft of stagnate water ?

I use to drive miles and miles through such water for days on end in my old V8 HG Holden going as fast as I could go with the old angel wings shooting up high and it never missed a beat, the next was a HX Holden V8 it was ok but not as good as to drive that fast.
Many people had to drive through such water, but if you had a 6cyl Holden 6they were hopeless as the fords and valiants and some of the 4WD were rubbish in such water, seen them sitting there cut out, I would stop and they would ask have you got any CRC, nope ! then progress to show them what a real car can do haha.

It's all about knowing what you can do or not do, but most people nowadays have bugger all common sense or much skill in the big city to take on such reality.
So the TV message is good for the lowest common denominator because fact is no one with common sense would take on something so stupid in the first place would they.

Problem is no one has common sense.

People except other people to tell them exactly what they can and can't do and even if that is right or wrong they just bloody well do it anyway, hence my earlier comment about Darwin's theory.

Natural selection at play.

Some think they have common sense, they own 4x4's with *24" lift kit and 40" wheels* with a diff lock front and rear and think they can transverse anything at all, however when they think they can get a selfie of themselves doing something "awesome" all their common sense heads out the exhaust

* = exaggeration

To be completely honest, I'd probably be one of those douchebags in their 4wd given the chance...

In all seriousness it must be frustrating when deads**ts get stranded and use up available emergency services because of their own stupidity.
