Default Getting a Loan.. what to do to car?

Hey fella's im getting a 6 grand loan to get my car on the road asap and do some mods :P

i was thinking

1 grand on exhaust
1 grand on brakes

how much for a rebuild as in all around rebuild .. new pistons, cam, headwork etc

will this blow it out (the price)

basically can anyone tell me what they'd do if they had 6grand budget or around about 6 grand

oh its an 88 EA Ghia 5 speed too

Open to suggestions.. youi can even suggest brand names and makes of brake systems etc etc

for exhaust i was thinking, pacemaker extractors with 2.5' redback exhaust and hi flow cat

Just someone tell me what to do with this money! i don't want to waste it.. i want as much done as possible

car already has lowered pedders sports suspension and some mags that look damn good for there age (probably really cool 6-7 years ago)

Mate, $1000 for a 6cyl exhaust is too much... plenty of companies (redback for one) make a prefab exhaust for E-series for under $500, if i recall correctly. Extractors for I6's aren't expensive either, I think. Plenty around 2nd hand too.

$1000 on brakes is also excessive - all you really need are a set of slotted rotors all around (DBA or RDA, www.discpads.com.au, i think), a decent set of pads (Bendix) and a fluid change. If you go all out, you could get rebuilt or exchange calipers, which aren't all that much either.

Rebuild, I dunno. If it's not smoky or bottom-end-noisy, I'd leave it - a lot of E-series guys get good gains from top-end mods like Tickford heads (or posting and shaving to increase compression) and cam changes. I've not heard of good gains from bottom-end changes, because it's not like you can rev them that much harder, or bump up compression with piston changes.

Even if you were up for a new motor, low k's AU motors are $bugger all from wreckers, and they've got all the good sh#t already in them (head, proper intake etc.)

i'd talk to jim mock motorsport, they know these engines pretty well and can get some good power out of them.

I've always been hesitant about a company that sells spark plugs as a performance part, but yes, they do build DAMN fast I6-powered Falcons.

Buy an AU engine with accessories for $1200.. Just fit DBA slotted rotors and ultimate brake pads [$370]..Fit flywheel to AU engine , new clutch, Bend front support bar forward or cut centre 300mm out and weld same size bar across the front and she'll fit after swapping engine mounts.. Use EA-ED inlet for time being, EA injectors.. Maybe latter 3.45 diff from E.L ...Neoprene suspension bush's and gas shocks, should have nice package..
Depends if you have multipoint engine originally the ecu will run AU with EA distributor...Other than that Stinger or Wolf ecu..

yes the cars multipoint,

Is an engine swap a big hassle would it cost much to have someone do it for me.. maybe i should just keep the EA engine it doesnt really blow smoke or have any bottom end noise.. gear changes are a bit rough but might need fluid changed (will have to do this because haven't checked it once)

I said 1 grand on exhaust because its how much my mates AU cost (my mate has a 5spd AU and it hauls ***, he let me take it for a spin).. he has exactly what i said.. pacemakers .. 2.5 exhaust and hi flow cat. cost him a grand

i can get pacemakers for about 400 at the cheapest (new)
exhaust about another 400 (redback, new)
high flow cats around 250 i heard? so thats already over a grand.. so a grand including labour sounded good?

well keep posting ideas fellers .. so i have a few options.. you guys out there certainly know more than me..

Nah EA's have character, first of the round shaped fords woo

6g aint much of a loan.. wont be hard to pay off.. my mate got a 20 grand loan for an 87 Celica GT 4.. now thats stupid

20 grand!!!!

and i could beat his car easily with a few mods.. he admits it.. (theres an EA gets around locally with EF engine. cam, exhaust, suspension etc .. keeps up with his turbo' rice burner)

don't plan on getting my money back either.. since when have e-series had much re-sell value..

If it wont be hard to pay off then jsut mod as you go and pay cash, you will get more bang for your buck with better mods or fuel to run around with by saving the interest $

I suggest you borrow only the amount that it takes to get the car on the road. Borrowing to fund modifications is pure madness. You will never get ahead in life borrowing for things that don't appreciate in value (ie houses, shares, historic cars).

could a mod please change the title and what i wrote to "I HAVE 6 GRAND TO SPEND"

take away the loan part

and delete this post

so i get some real feedback

Telling me I wont get anywhere in life because of 6 grand is pretty damn sad.. it's either save up and get mod by mod or do it all at once.. with a loan

big woop

Do what you want with your money. It might be wise to invest it or save it etc, but it's your choice.

For 6k, I'd get an AU engine (600-1200), get some head work (1000) and cam, full exhaust (1000), maybe replace some bushes, upgrade sway bar, diff, and a chip if you can afford it (1000-2000 depending). Other than that, put away 500 or so for maintenance.

Yeah, your T5 will fit it (i think?)...

Not wishing to give you advice you haven't asked for, but spending $6k on an EA is akin to lighting cigarettes with $100 notes. Yeah, it'll be a hot EA, but in 2 years you'll be sick of it and sell it for $1500, and you've got nothing to show for it.

Plus, $6k will buy you a bloody good EL Gli/Futura, which will be every bit as fast as your modded EA, and a lot nicer to drive.

Just stuff to think about.

Hmmm, firstly (and I know you don't want to hear it), its crazy borrowing money to modify a car. If you don't have it, don't spend it.

Now that is out of the way,

I wonder how much BA XT half cuts go for these days? 182kw, sequential auto in an EA shell :

Hmmm..... For $6K I'd buy a good clean EB or ED XR6. Good performance and handling. Would be an excellent base for mods down the track. Will always retain more value than an EA.

I googled around for BA half-cuts (still reckon 182kw in an ea would go well) but couldn't get a price, though you can get an S14 200sx half cut for $2200....hmmm SR20DET EA :

EF,EL,AU motor and ecu. ($700-$1200)
Pacemakers are $365 on ebay, cat back installed is $300, and hi flow cats are $150ish
DEV4/5, WADE, CROW or ALTED Cam (200-500)
Headwork to match. (valve springs, ports matched, polished) $$$ depends where you go.
Youll then need a chip like a chiptorque, unichip or even a standalone like an MS2 or WOLF3d.. I suggest going 2nd hand with the chip as i cant justify spending $1500 for a unichip when a wolf is just a few hundred extra.
Rising rate fuel regulator($150)
3.45 LSD from a late XR or Fairmont Ghia ($750)

So theres about 4-5 grand... And youll have a good amount of power to go with. (150rwkw+)

But to make it easiest,
EF/EL/AU Motor
DEV3HL Kit
and a chip to go with it...

youll be looking at good numbers then.

For $8000 you can get an AU with a warranty from a car yard! Why spend $6000 on a heap of junk (no offence intended) then sell your EA for about $2500 - or get an EL for $6000, and only have $3500 debt
