If you are looking at upgrading to FTTP with Technology Choice then you must have a fair bit of cash kicking around. Most plans above 100mbs cost a fair bit, then you need to consider what the real world performance is going to be like. Fibre will definitely give you better performance for some things, especially multiple users , but for 1-2 users that may be browsing or viewing content then I think 100mbs will be plenty

if you havent understood from my previous comments

if i want to go NBN hard wired im either going to have to pay for new copper line from well somewhere to the house as it was severed in atleast one location over 10 years ago not just disconnected at a point or node

or if i was lucky and was able to (rather than refit old tech seeing ill have to fit something) have a fiber line fed from the curb

but looks like ill just keep waiting and stay wireless

I am curious to know if any Urban FTTN installations are getting less than 90% of the rated speed that they pay for (I pay for 100 down, 40 up, FTTP and get an average near 94 down 36 up --- whoa -- Just checked, and today I am lucky to get 70/35)

Sorry, Sarge, maybe it is already on record somewhere. How are you connected to the NBN ? FTTP ? FTTN ? - if so how far away is your node ? Are you Urban, Suburban, rural or Townie ?

FTTN unfortunately.
Not sure where the closest node is but can't be too close with those numbers.
My old house which was about 100m from the node saw a sync speed of about 44mbps.

With a little more use of 4K streaming at home .... I might move up to 100/40 from 50/20 at some point.

Not needed right now ... but will look into it.

My FTTN pretty much gets within 2Mbps of its congestion limit all hours of the day and night.

I have to say I've not noticed any difference between my old adsl2 (15 Mbps) and my new broadband (45 Mbps), both tested at speedtest.net.

I did get some netflix problems when my speed dropped to 4 Mbps due to a line fault.

My only complaint is 'weak' wifi on the new gateway the ISP supplied me with, silly me thought being new it must be better than the old one.

So the NBN has given me no noticeable speed increase but taken away some wifi, I was better off with adsl2 and a modem that had better wifi.

I stuck with my old ISP Modem .... as it only used 2.4Ghz WIFI .... I have a 3-level split home ... and the modem is downstairs at one end of the house. I reckon I'd have issues if i went with the new modem with 5Ghz ... as coverage is less ... but bandwidth is higher.

It works for me at the moment .... so no complaints.

I’d suggest a quick fix is connect to 2.4Ghz wifi on your router rather than 5Ghz, but to get the benefits of faster speed, installing a meshed wifi network is cost effective and gives you the speed benefits of 5Ghz

I Hate being bound by an ISP's router.
I use a wifi router connected as a switch (No DHCP server).


I want to be able to VPN to my home from a remote location, and VPN to a remote location from my home router.
I want content filtering on my router based on periodically downloaded rules.


I do not want an archaic and/or consumer piece of HW between me and the world.


Draytek support said that they could help out by replacing the ISP (Optus) supplied router, and putting it in a DMZ to keep the phone going ... this is my plan ... however I have some 'flux' in my work life that may delay this.

I switched off the 5 Ghz wifi already because non of my devices have it.
Now I'm looking at wifi extenders but to be honest I think there's something else going on like a dodgy netcomm wifi router.

Do not use a Wifi Extender !


Wifi Extenders take multi devices and channel it via a single wifi connection to the master

Most will give you another SSID (not zero handoff like we are used in on mobiles)


Best option is get a wifi router, ideally one that will step frequencies if it finds noise/competition (Netgear NightHawk is very good)
Something with Multi external aerials
Look at your placement - if you have some ethernet cabling in your home is is a great advantage (I have Cat6+ to all TV points, and some bedrooms)
Check your area using an app like "Wifi Analyzer" in Android Store by Kevin Yuan - might see that your neighbour is blasting you with a strong signal.

Wouldn't use anything else now.

I've got my letter advising NBN will be ready mid June. I'm currently paying $59.99/mth for unlimited ADSL2+ and getting north of 10mbps+ consistently. Router currently showing 14.5mbps.

The lowest they are offering is NBN12 unlimited for the same price but have NBN50 which is an extra $10/mth.

I live close to both a node and the exchange so I hope I would get a decent speed on NBN50. Problem is you don't really know until you get it.

Wirless here for about 18months. It works, a bit slow, however does not work in rain, slightly heavier rain stops it completely.
Good thing is we're in drought at present.

I have been on FTTP with TPG 100/40 for nearly 3 years now. I changed the generic router they send out to a TP-LINK Archer C9 which made a huge difference.

I had the NBN connected today on FTTN and am very happy that it far exceeded expectations despite all the horror stories.

Bonus is with the new router, the Wifi doesn't cutout when the microwave is on so can continue watching Foxtel when cooking

I picked the TPG 50 plan and have got it up over 47 down and about 20 up.

Same here, plan and everything except I'm using an old 5th gen Apple Airport Extreme (2011) which still works beautifully. I planned to use in the meantime while the TPG one came but surprised that it's still up to the task.
I get about 48/19 on the 50/20 plan FTTP.

Now what to do with the TPG one?

General Note:
A lot of computers HDD are limited to around 80/60 that is where SSD will improve performance...

Just moved from Cable to HFC with Telstra and my download speed has fallen from over 100 MBPS to less than 50 MBPS. Help desk has gone from polite and perfectly understandable English speaking Manila to unintelligible broken English with thick Indian accent and rude patronising attitude so I am have no luck getting it sorted. I am thinking of giving Foxtel broadband a try.

Yes; I should be on the 100/40 but all the Telstra call centre idiots want to talk about is if my modem is plugged in correctly and working. I don't think their modem tests are going to fix it.

Check your address at https://myrepublic.net/au/ it will give you a more accurate speed estimate than nbnco give out.

I know your pain aussieblue, wait till they tell you to make a record/order of when your modem drops out for a day or a week...

Then after the 2nd modem telspray will say we will send you another 3rd modem but the sound of crickets & smell of failure from their side means it actually may not turn up either..

I know its not what hopefully is going to be your outcome aussieblue but it was my great telstra experience & its still a pain half the time as we are still with them (dont ask or say peoples please lol )
