Australian boss reveals local right-hand drive F150 program has also been pitched
Ford Australia has confirmed the much-hyped V8 Ranger Raptor ute project has been discussed internally but has not been signed off for production.

It has also confirmed pitches from third-party engineering firms to partner in a local right-hand drive program for the F150 pick-up, but nothing had been approved.

Yes thinking about but nothing more to share = we’re not going to follow Holden out the door
Why confirm something you don’t want to talk about, it’s just PR for now.

V8 Raptor project put on ice
By Cameron Kirby, 15 May 2020 News

V8 Raptor given the axe
Highly-anticipated V8 Ranger project has been put on hold by Ford

The highly anticipated V8 Ranger Raptor has likely hit an insurmountable roadblock, with Ford understood to have put the secret project on an indefinite hold.

Much to the dismay of enthusiasts around the country, it’s not an engineering issue that has prevented the high-performance ute from hitting the market, but instead budget constraints related to a COVID-19 drop in global revenues.

ADVERTISING

When Wheels first broke the news of the V8 Raptor project in January, the dual-cab halo remained a work-in-progress with the program not yet fully signed-off by Ford officially.

Wheels understands that Ford’s tightening financial restrictions, both locally and overseas, has resulted in that final sign-off now being withheld indefinitely.

There is a slim chance the Mustang-powered dual-cab could be revived if things change for the better in a rapid fashion, however that appears highly unlikely.

Premcar was the company chosen to take care of the V8 Raptor program, thanks in part to its strong links to the Blue Oval, as well as its impressive engineering ability.

Read next: 2021 Ford Ranger to be fitted with 242kW petrol engine

Premcar was created following a management buyout of Prodrive Engineering in 2012, and is manned by many of the same people that developed the Miami supercharged V8 that powered the fastest Falcons in existence.

This would have been handy, as the Coyote engine that was slated to be fitted beneath the Ranger’s bonnet is the basis of the feted Miami V8.

It was understood that Ranger Raptors would be delivered to Ford’s facility in Campbellfield – where Herrod Performance built the 500 supercharged Mustang R-Specs – with the 2.0-litre diesel engine removed, to be replaced by the same 5.0-litre petrol V8 that is fitted to Mustang GT models.

With Ford’s final approval of the project now seemingly off the table, there is still a chance the public could be treated to the V8 dual-cab.

Premcar has the ability to build cars at its Epping facility, and is currently doing so with the Navara N-Trek Warrior.

The independent engineering firm also has the capacity to expand the facility to include an addition vehicle line.

Premcar declined to comment when contacted by Wheels.

It's a shame (generally speaking) car cost accountants have a mentality based on how to "save" money and seem to eternally struggle to cross the bridge of "spend a bit more and earn a lot more"...which is where "car executives with sales dna" need to take over.....Geoff Polites was a classic example.

Just imagine a product range based on exciting, interesting to drive vehicles out in the market once Covid-19 and it's economic impact is lessened and consumers have confidence to spend...restarting a product development after that occurs just misses the boat.

A lot of fringe products will be cancelled I imagine.

It makes so much sense.
Whole market sales down in each category,
Except Hemi V8 Ram sales up and still rising.
Petrol at 20 year low prices.
Unprecedented customer acclaim when project was announced.
Mr Bean Counter looks at it all.
Cancel project.

Fair enough but, before Covid-19 hit, Ford North America was in serious financial trouble.
It's almost a straight line collapse in profit from Q3 '19 to Q1 '20 and as we know, when
America catches cold, we get pneumonia.

There is a huge push to save money atm. I'd expect a lot of things will get put on the backburner. Across all manufacturers.

Passion projects like performance cars are usually the first thing to go when times get tough.

Saw a Shelby Raptor on Sat (maybe Friday)

Huge thing.

Was a bit overdone style wise for my tastes, but certainly had massive presence on the road. Can see how many would love it's look for sure.

Just as I suspected, the story was made up. I wondered why I had never seen one if it was a confirmed program. Good job Wheels

https://www.caradvice.com.au/853609/...possibly-ever/

A Ford Ranger Raptor V8 will not arrive in Australian showrooms this year – or likely ever – an extensive investigation by CarAdvice has found.

Contrary to media reports that claimed a Ford Ranger Raptor V8 “is coming”, “has been sanctioned by Ford Australia”, will be “sold through Ford dealers (with) full five-year warranty”, and is “anticipated” by the end of 2020, CarAdvice has learned the program was never close to approval stage.

CarAdvice has been told the Ford Ranger Raptor V8 was ruled out last year while the idea was still in its infancy – more than six months before it made news – and was not “put on hold” due to recent “tightening financial restrictions” driven by the coronavirus crisis, as has been claimed.

Despite media reports that said “there are two things we know for sure: that a V8-engined Ford Ranger Raptor is coming, and that a lengthy queue is already forming for it”, the idea never made it beyond an internal presentation and discussion paper. A prototype was not even built.

The silence from Ford is deafening, if there was ever any intention to do this,
why would it pick 12-18 months before a new product cycle begins with so
many baked in improvements. Short answer is that they wouldn't.

I still believe that Ford would love to do a truly HP Ranger but that has to be
tempered with with the reality of economics and what future power trains
will be offered and more importantly what those buyers really want.

If the intention is to gain more sales in the mid sized pick up segment then
Ford needs to deliver a Ranger that's better than the competition in all the
checkpoints that matter to regular buyers. I look forward to seeing what
Ford is planning to do with the whole package.

True JPD80, there was a carsales link that I am surprised didnt seem to get a mention here regarding the V6TDi...not sure if that leaves room for a Ecoboost V6?

First things first, a V6 diesel is clearly something that buyers have been calling for and
regardless of performance, the smoothness of the engine makes it a winner in a lot of
buyers books. Is there room for another performance level above that? Maybe but I'm
thinking that Ford wants to see how the V6 diesel goes first before considering anything
further.Well, duh but depending on what engine packages go into Bronco, there may be
a better chance of those power modules migrating across to Ranger or at least I hope so..

I put it down to people inside Ford trying to formulated something interesting and different, something that
was worthy of consideration by Ford management in persuing small but valuable niche products.

It only takes one undisciplined person shooting his mouth off to kill off any chance of something special.

What I don't understand is that they have all of the ingredients.
It is not like they have to develop a new Engine or Gear Box.
It would be a unique product.
If there are no F Series coming in RHD then why is this not a strong option.

Imagine the PR ford management could have got out of this. Ram has shown there is an appetite for a v8 dual cab,(>5500 units here in aus moved)
I would argue there is a much larger one than many even thought. All those FPV/HSV enthusiasts that may want a dual cab as they now have kids etc
Look at what happened with interest when there was even a rumour of one.
it’s not rocket science, Harrop was putting LS3 v8 in the Colorado. Come on FORD your a manufacturer....
Mean while people take there money elsewhere. So disappointing.....

Thanks. We can only hope...
I had my name down at two dealerships for one when the story broke about the v8 raptor with cash ready to go. But alas both said it wouldn’t happen and am holding. Just dont like the old DS ram enough and the DT won’t be here to next year from ASV. Maybe a mint second hand Harrop superado it is.

They need some passion.
Didn't staff at Holden secretly get the Monaro off the ground into feasibility without management knowing about it.
