Default Importing to Australia

Hi all, having just read the thread below from Dingy about bringing his exit over here, I looked at the link for the government website regarding importing cars but nowhere could I find anything about post'89 models.

Has anyone got experience in doing this? The personal import doesn't apply to me as I won't be living overseas and owning / operating the car there for more than twelve months so if I simply wish to buy a car and bring it here, how does one go about it and what are the associated tax levies, excise etc?

From what I can gather, apart from the hotrod form, all cars must be stock too.......it can't be that hard surely?

Jamie

NSW based member GTP370 (Paul) imported a Dodge Charger from the USA only recently

He would be the guru to quiz as he just went through the process

Hi RareV8,

Licenced customs broker here:

Assuming its a road car and not a race car, there are 3 ways to get it in if post 89:

1. Owned & used O/S for over 12 months
2. Letter of compliance from manufacturer - states that the car complied with the ADR's at the time the car was manufactured
3. Through a RAWS workshop - certain workshops will import the car for you as they are licenced to comply certain models of cars to ADR's.

All info avaialble here:

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...les/index.aspx

Note:
5% duty on value of car.
10% GST on (value of car + Freight + Insurance + Duty)

Luxury car tax (30%) will also apply if you exceed the threshhold ($57500ish)

No worries, a few more hoops to go through than I first thought...why do they have to be such a PIA.

A friend of mine just brought his late 2000's Jag X-type into Melbourne from the UK. Apart from paying the 10% tax, and shipping costs, he said the biggest pain in the backside was getting it ADR'd, which involved modifying the factory fit Isofix child seat restraints, which I believe are non compliant over here ?

Reason for bringing it over is that it's worth less than half of what it is in Oz due to terminal depreciation ! (Residual value was <33% after 3 years !!)
