Default Quick question regarding stall converter

Hey guys, I know this question doesn't belong in this category but I want to fit my stall converter in my car, and I was wondering if I needed to re-tune my car for it with the flash tuner?

Sounds like a dumb question to ask but I better ask you guys before I go ahead with it.

Yeah you will, shouldn't cost bugger all, but will need to make a change so it doesn't go into limp home mode when stalled up.

You need to retune the car. The reason being that the higher stall will have the load changed on your engine and it will have different ignition timing and fuel ratio adjustments to take advantage

Stalls are fun Iv got a 3000 in mine it gets annoying sometime as the car almost revs to 3000 before it take off like a rocket if u stall the car right u will launch it off the line well I normally take off at 2200

Cheers for that feedback mate. Thats great to hear. I only have a 2400 stall, but am hoping it will be big enough to make a difference off the lights till boost really hits. My car makes good power from about 2300rpm on so I wanna make sure I remove any possibility of lag up to that point. Would be nice to be able to break traction from stand still too.

As for drags at Heathcote, I would love to but with work commitments its difficult to consider.

Will do mate. From what I have read, its one of the best mods to do for improving 0-100 times.

I will provide a full run down on what everything is like when its all fitted, including cam, xcal3, stall, etc.

I have an app on my phone that I can use to give a rough estimate of 0-100 times too so I will use that before and after to give a rough indication of the improvement.

My stall goes to higher revs and is a bit doughy. The lockup isnt so hard most of the ties so it would rely on getting a good stall convertor which does its job better.
So you need a good stall first and then a tune to make the car work with the stall to optimise acceleration.

Just reviving an old thread.

I went and saw my tuner yesterday to get his opinion on what it would take to get my stall converter fitted and if I needed another tune.

He reckons I shouldn't need to and it can be done based on my current tune ok.

So with that in mind, Im going to book it in and see how I go with it. Will report back and let you know what the outcome is when its done.

it`s sounds like good thing to overcome that tall 1st gear in these things, , a couple of years ago i talked with a torque converter builder and his recommendation for a nice compromise was a 2500rpm, obviously some guys want it a bit wilder, i will be interested to hear how it goes Shav.

will let you know mik. I'm booking it in for 2 weeks time so Im hoping the 0-100 times will drop at the minimum. But ultimately the engine will be on boost a lot sooner. This could be the best mod I do to the car, if what Im hearing is right.

Well... i have been running my factory tune for months with a 4200 stall...

I have never put it into limp mode accidently ... only on purpose while experimenting...

Mine too..

I've got a custom tune live tune done few ago from chiptorque.

about 6 ago I got a 2600 stallie fitted, no retune need, never even thought about Limp home mode, never had a problem

and yes it halls of the line like a freight train now

and I'm getting much better fuel economy too, the engine is no longer under as much load when cruising on the Hwy at 2000 rpm and 100km/h

I spent the extra and got a 9" light weight racey version, couldn't be happier...... well with a supercharger maybe

Thanks guys. That's what I was thinking too. Sounds like something that should have been done a long time ago. So I will get on it.

Stav - totally understand what your saying mate. I think a tune will get a tad more benefit, but with the current tuning situation of mine being a cost vs benefit (i.e. xcal1 ---> xcal 3 upgrade) I think I will see how the car goes with the stall as is.

Thanks Stu. For some reason I have a feeling this will nearly give me as much thrill as when I fit the s/c on originally. I not counting my chickens yet, but I am looking forward to some good acceleration from the lights, which is what I have been missing since the s/c was fitted.

Don't quite think the change will be as great as adding a s/c, but it will be noticeable, and you will enjoy it!
