I have a e series LTD with its premium sound and also a b series xr8 with premium sound.
I listen to them back to back and I'm not sure the b series premium sound is better. Mine is a little better but I've upgraded sub and speakers. But stock for stock the e series premium sound might have the b series? What do we think? |

yeah, probably because DF/DL LTD's came standard with a rear amp, full premo sound, 9 speakers (inc subwoofer), etc etc....

E-series wins hands down for stock setup, I think the deck was designed by Pioneer. The DSP/Effect option sounded terrific. BA premium sound is about on par with a cheap no-brand boom box from K-mart, the DSP effects sounded like they come from a kid's toy. FG is a step up, made by the same group that built the BA premium sound, but is not quite to the level of E-series. The FG premium sound seems to have removed the tinny, lame Sound Processing Effects the BA premium sound had.

I defiently know the Amp was Pioneer on factory cars with premo sound from EF2 onwards...
only ones that got ///failpine ****, were EF/EL/AU GLi/Forte/Futura/Fairmont's IF they were optioned with the 6-stack and amp/sub That's coming from Ford, not me

the alpine amp wasn't to bad i had if powering a 12" VDO sub pretty well. Have have had a similar sound comparison in my EL Ghia and my uncles BA XR8 and both agreed the the EL Ghia stereo was better.

Even my upgraded ba premium sound struggles against the stock LTD e series premium sound.

What have you done to yours to upgrade it? Did the E series premo have CD player or tape deck?

E series has 6 stacker in the boot and tape deck up front. In my ba sound upgrade is as follows Sub replaced for a kenwood 8 inch sub kfc-xw800f 4 speakers front door and rear parcel shelf with 6 inch kenwood 3 way speakers with adaptor spacers. Sound quality is much better, most notably you can lift volume to almost full and its still clear. heaps better than standard for about $300 and a few hours fitting. |

Is that Kenwood sub a direct fit for the old factory unit?

Even outside the stereo, the quality of panels, plastics and seats were higher quality than the BA/BF series.
No wonder the EL outsold the Commodore at the time...

EF-EL, AU and BA-BF premium sound head units were all made by FMS audio.
FMS was a joint venture between Ford Mazda and Sanyo. |

I've had three EL Ghia's and all three of them annihilated my BF XR with premium sound. The AU Ghia i have also has impressive sound, though there is not enough control on the sub output, and it booms a little. Still kicks the BF's backside though. I remember pulling the speakers out of my BA XR (non premo) and they were a joke. Having said that the BF's with premo looked even worse. From memory one had Pioneer speakers and the other had Panasonic.

My EF Ghia was by far the best factory stereo I ever owned.
Listening to Van Halen on 'Stadium' was brilliant. |

I really like my AUs Premium sound. Very loud & clear. Since im not into deafening myself, its more than acceptable for me. Even sounds better than the Yamaha 5.1 setup I used to use in the lounge room.
The E-series one is pretty good too. My EF Fairmont Ghia had the full DSP & Amp too, unfortunately the speakers were shot simply from age. So I cant comment on volume but clarity & DSP effect were very good. |

oh, and the stacker and amp in my ef is pioneer not alpine. not that theres anything wrong with alpine. |

Iv had premmy sound in my BA1 XR and BF2 GT-P, both cars I bought new, and I still swear to this day the BA1 unit pumped and sounded better..
I was happy with the prem sound in my BA, but never really happy with the BF. My "bum in the seat" feeling was the BA premmy sound was better.. My AU XR was a non prem sound car, I bought and fitted all the componants to update it to factory Prem sound and am driving that all via an older single din Pioneer MP3 headunit, and the sound is pretty darn good.. Enough for me to be happy enough with it as is for now..

Both of my NC fairlanes as well as my dads one originally had the Alpine premo sound. With 6stacker in the boot, tape up front, alpine adjustable amp, (unscrew the small coverplate) and a sub in the shelf. I actually have two of the amps setup for when I get the sub & new speakers. In today's terns, those amps still hold their own. One in it's original quarter panel bracket, the other mounted on the back seat.

No premo sound but base systems here.
I had a very short stint in an EL GLI and it had an excellent stock system. Then had the AUII Futura, wasnt bad at all but i upgraded the whole thing for better sound reproduction and better sound at higher volumes. Could go up to 24 with max bass settings without distorting, had decent volume at that point. Now we're up to the BFII Futura, ive done too many kms in it and its safe to say they system is a peice of s... distorts at 21 with max bass settings which isn't a loud volume it seems. Plus its not like you can replace the headunit on these, only rig one up in the tissue box holder and that looks odd and crap IMO. Seems to be the same sort of pattern as is with premo. My 2c.

My EL sounded very good for a stock setup. My AU isn't to far off the EL, but as mentioned is lacking control. The FG Premium sound isn't to bad until you turn it up and then the sub distorts and is out of sync. As for calling it premium, the definition of Premium must have changed because it certainly isn't that.

Not being able to totally ditch the factory headunit/ICC setup is one of my pet hates about the B and F series cars.
Not only does it look a bit ugly and odd having a second headunit in the dash because you cant remove the stock unit, but the whole (B Series only as Iv not had an FG) Premium ICC setup is so primitive unless you put in a Carputer thing into it or do one of those ASL setups with the DVD player etc.. One of the many things that won me on the AU was the option to totally remove the headunit and fit whatever the hell you want and not have to leave the old one there cause the car wont work without it.

I'm going to go against the grain here..
The premo sound in the BA XR6T i had was awesome to say the least, it just refused to distort even with the volume turned up to max. Was very impressive but then i sold it and bought an EL Ghia, while the premo sound in that was not at all bad, it was never as good as the BA's, it either sounded tinny or distorted at LOUD volume which would quickly cause me to turn it down due to how bad it sounded. It's worth mentioning that Ghia was an immaculate, low Km car and the speakers were not shot or anything. Problem is......my BF just doesn't sound as good as my BA...it still sounds better than the EL but it's just not as crisp and clear as the BA was...I can't exlplain it... |

Now I wonder why that is so?? Is it down to the componants, sound deadening/insulation or what?? My 03 XR had the Premium upgrade system with the colour screen and non climate control a/c. My 07 BF2 GT-P had the standard factory fit Prem sound with full dual zone climate control. Could it be the optional Prem sound gear worked better than the factory fitted item?

Well if the BA is better than the BF then all I can say the BF must be absolute rubbish...problem with me is that I love music with a passion and very pedantic when it comes to sound quality . I also have a fairly decent home set up so expect that when they say "premium " for a car set up they should mean it
