I have recieved another final letter from ford about the recall on the steering a while ago. Was wondering if I should take it in or not for this. I remember back when it happened the general consensus was not to take it in as the fix was worse than the problem.
Im wondering what those that actually got it done think of it now. Recommend or not

Black xr6
As far as I know they just spot weld a bolt on the steering rack so I cannot see any problems arrising from getting the recall work done I believe it was recalled because there was the possibility of losing your steering if it came loose I had mine done during a service and noticed no change whatsoever I remember reading a thread on here a while back with all the info if you are concerned or give them a call |

Just got mine as well. I'm the same as you Black XR6, heard a heap of "failed steering rack" horror stories just after it was done
I'm now tossing up if I will take it in or not.

Actually I remember had my rack replaced at the same time(lucky still under warranty) but I am not sure if it had anything to do wuth the recall work
Might be worth some more investigation me thinks |

Also, you shouldn't receive another notice if it has already been done I'd imagine. ****** |

What's the way you can tell if it's been done before?

I know Dealers have complete history of all work performed on each vehicle and I figure their sytems would all be linked so I reckon you could find out this way

bottom of the front drivers door, below the hinges. There are silver stickers there for each recall performed.

The problem was as I understand it that they used bolts that weren't strong enough and could sheer under loads and / or the nuts were simple nuts not with the nylock nuts that dont come undone.
Had mine done about 6 months ago, no problems.

yeah no problems mate ;) - i wasn't picking at where u said they were , just on mine they weren't actually on the door . I nearlly didn't see them so i just mentioned it because when i first looked - i looked under the hinge on the front drivers door but didn't catch them out the corner of my eye until a second look - they were under the hinge as u said , but on the the other side of the hinge on the body of the car ;) - i just said it incase if anyone else might of been looking just on the actual door under the hinge .cheers for the help anyway .

I have just recieved the recall letter today after owning our AU11 wagon for 14mths or more. it does say ' final notice' but its our 1st letter!. So maybe all that have one would be best to contact a dealer. We called today and have a booking for tomorrow. The letter states that ' due to possable inappropriate servicing....causing the steering rack to loosen, and in extreme cases may 'detatch!',resulting in deteriorition or LOSS of steering!'..NICE !.
How long has this recall be going for?? cheers Dave |
