Default P PLATES why do we need to display them?

in QLD when on holidays i tried to buy P plates so my girlfreind could have a drive of the rental car,
no such thing up there, so why do Victoria and other states need them?
yeah L plates are a good idea but how often do you see some clown driving as if they have no experience and dont have P plates.

what is the point of them, a cop attractent or a way of letting us know theres a cute driver possibilty?

A little from column A, and a little from column B.

It's just a stupid law left over from the stone ages. Absolutely NO use for them.

Casper, you hit the nail on the head, as soon as I got my FPV GT I did the right thing and displayed my "P" plates, I had 6 months left on my "P's", and with in 3 days I was pulled over with all the usual B.S. questions, is this your car, how'd you get it, what do you do for a living, nothing more then a licence check and a chance to look at the car, Any way with in a 6 week period from getting the GT and having my "P's" displayed, I had been pulled over and had the usual licence check, 8 times !, now that I don’t have them I have only been pulled over once in 7 months. (Over took an unmarked cop car a bit to fast).

More to the point, why do we need seperate road rules for each state?

As there are speed restrictions placed on a P Plater, displaying the P's allows other drivers to recognise these restrictions.

doesnt apply in Vic. Only restriction is BAC content.

And unless you are found to be over they don't check your licence anyway.

Or caps just above the arm rest line with any car that has P plates - well, just about any. Most P platers I see have their seat back wound so far back that they are just about lying down while driving. P plates on these cars let everyone know that these people/"drivers" CAN'T SEE WHERE THEY'RE GOING and have little to no control over their car.

I know it's a generalisation, but have a look next time you are driving around, and see how many young people (whether or not they are displaying P plates) have the drivers seat wound down as far as it will go. These drivers are the most dangerous on the road, because they normally drive like dickheads, and the moment they get into trouble, they are in no position to correct their cars.

Uck, I hate having the seat back, and I'm a P plater.

Edit: Fixed the quote

Hence, why you only remember the fully-sik seat-fully-back & cap-pointing-at-the-sky or teh stupid girls in Xcels swerving everywhere or the other numerous P-plater stereotypes.

What you fail to notice is the hundreds of P-platers you come across during the day that drive normally and safely.

My point: why dont the shit drivers just get pulled over for driving crap, instead of everyone getting pulled over for being born close to the same year as those other young drivers makin us look bad.
spot on, couldnt have put it better, so ill just quote ya.

why not, thats exactly what the govt. intend to do with their BS curfew laws.

Quote:
i trust my girlfriend P plater so much that i would have paid for the the cars repair had there been a problem. i hired the car i am 32 years old and probably no better driver than her(i am a fairly considerate and patient driver, but still a bit of a hoon), it was the kindest a rental car had been driven i reckon(when she drove it)
thats fair enough mate, but, no matter how good a driver you are, other people can always smash into you, and if the conditions of the insurance on the rental car state that no p plater is allowed to drive it, then you're shit out of luck.

I'm on my p's...i drive a shiny red car, thats lowered has tinted windows a set of shiny wheels etc....p plates displayed and have NEVER been pulled over, EVER.

my brother was pulled over in his car ages ago, and was fined for not displaying p plates, when he had the front 1 clearly displayed, and the rear was on the parcel shelf, where it had CLEARLY fallen off. the cop fined him like $80, and im sure there was probably demerit points as well. which is absolute BS...obviously a tight *** cop, if the plate had fallen off and the other 1 was displayed clearly.

also, on the SA to VIC licensing stuff.....if you come to VIC with an SA license, you can keep it for 3 months, then if you aren't 18, you wont be able to have your p's in victoria anymore.....there are some loopholes to get it extended for a further 3 months, but i can't remember what they are exactly.

yep, SA 100kms tops... but pfft, take the plates off for the freeway trip and no-one will know.

But really, how hard it is to follow the rules every now and then. And if u get worried about people in other cars that you dont know labelling you as a "Rowdy P-plater" who cares, they dont realise how sensible some of the p-platers are, and it is their problem... :

i just moved down from QLD and up there you dont have to display P Plates at all not even L plates, but now im in SA and i have to display my P Plates :(, its BS, theres really no need for them, except the fact P Platers arnt allowed to do 110 on the freeway, which sux because when i moved down i was still on QLD licence and did 110-115 everyday to get to work and back, and since changeing my licence over to SA i am only allowed to go 100 on the freeway now :(. its crap, but i guess its the rules and no matter what state your in theres some rule that will stop you from doing what Open licence drivers can do. but i guess display a P Plate doesnt make it any different to as if i was in QLD and not displaying one. QLD P Plates for 3 years, SA P Plates for 2 years, catch 22 wherever you go.

Thats true... this year QLD changed some rules to bring them 'in line' with the other states.

I Believe the very question is under reveiw in QLD at the moment. As of the 1st of January 2005 it is now compulsary to display an L plate, and they are currently trying to bring back the compulsary P plate

Get pulled over by an RBT, get asked to speak into one of those breath test machines.

Can I see your licence please?

Speak your name and address into the machine. Oh you are a provisional driver? Shouldn't you be displaying your plates?

PING!

Just don't get caught, because I just got this:

Penalty: $78.00
Offence: NOT COMPLY P2 LICENCE - NO "P" PLATES
The offence carries 3 demerit points.

3 points! :(

i dont think that failing to display P plates should attract demerit points though, just a fine would suffice.

Double demerits are only supposed to appy to speeding and seatbelt offences.

:edit:My bad - Seems now they ad one point on to every other demerit point during these periods just for fun too.
