Default Guess what a BA Mk2 XR6 is going for at the auctions ?

Info in case you are looking at an XR6 or Fairmont. Compare to value of a 11/03 BA futura 88,000km sold for $10,750 (though this was unusually cheap. You gotta be ready for the bargain !). Commodores of the same vintage & km's still sell for up to $2k more than the equivalent falcon, except for the VZ's which have less difference. Price drops a lot if over 1000,000 km, even if just over.

You can probably still see the pictures on Pickles Melbourne web site:

Passed in at $22,400, may sell, refered to seller. Usually they sell, maybe for a coupla hundred more.

73 CP 10/04, FORD, FAIRMONT, BA Mk II Ghia, Sedan, 5 Seats
AUTOMATIC, 4.0 ltr, 6 cyl, Unleaded, Multi-Point Injected, 112,952 kms (Showing On Odometer), MERCURY SILVER, Rego.No:TFR596, Aircond., Airbag Dual, P/Steer, P/Wind, ABS, IRS, Cru. $18,400 passed in.

Who would buy a new car ? All these have service records and most of these still have 11 months warranty. When I bought my first new car it only came with 12 months, 40,000km warranty !

You can pay a lot more for an XR 6 than a Fairmont with EXACTLY the same perfomance and less luxury features (??)
Fairmont would be cheaper to insure too. Just add body kit and suspension.

only problem is you cant test drive them! in 2002 my dad bought an AU 2001 fairmont Ghia. it was the cleanest fairmont he could find with 48,000ks (now done 200,000ks). the previous owner was single, no kids and was only ever used by himself. the back seat was never used lol. BUT, this didnt mean that it wouldnt need a brand new engine :O. there was fault in the crank shaft which eventualy wore out the engine, and being still under warranty (lucky) the ford dealer just slapped a new one in.

Not lucky, that is why fleet cars are attractive - the Factory warranty is the equivelent of a dealer warranty, but better!!!

this no different to buying a used car in a yard though. i shall relate a brief history of our old car, an eb fairmont wagon, purchased at a "reputable" dealer.
- leaked water within 2 hours of purchase-fixed under warranty
- air-con compressor buggered - normal wear no warranty $700
- head gasket buggered(while on honeymoon)- normal wear sort of- $1400 they paid half (had to machine head supposedly)

all this in less than a month, never did buy another car from them.......

oh moral of this story? never ever under ANY circumstances but a car on friday the 13th, ever!

Love the resale value of these Falcons... Your $40K becomes $15K in 3 years. At the other extreme you have something like a 15yo Honda Prelude ($40K new) that still sells for $10K. Then they wonder why people aren't buying Aussie cars anymore..

I bought my BA XR6T in 2004 for $39K on the road, sold it in late 2006 (2.5 years old) for $30K. How is that bad resale?

ALthough I'll never buy another Ford. The Japanese and European offerings are too good at the moment. Hence why I now have a Forester XT... Black of course!

These are wholesale auctions though mostly. The car we bought was from a place where a lot of caryards buy from, who would put probably 5g's on top of the price

SO the girl I sold my SP23 to could have bought your XR6 for the same money. Mine had 32,000Km. What's I design, is that leather?

i-design interior is a special interior package which is half leather and half swaide (not sure on the spelling, sorry). Its pretty rare on lower models but can be found in XR8's and other upper class models somtimes.

but you really dont know what your getting though do you.. personally I would rather buy from a car yard (warranty etc), rather than auction... I am sure plenty of lemons go through there and are sold off.

Depending on year of manufacture and klms they are often still covered under full car warranty.
Even police / ambulance vehicles with the exception of interior.

All these cars go through reasonable testing before being put on the lot and if they are sold and have major faults, most of the auctioneers will agree to have them repaired or a suitable vehicle swapped.

We buy a coulpe of cars a month through fowles & pickles and have these places have always been very reasonable.

Pickles sells them with NRMA inspections IIRC and, like I said earlier, all major problems are covered by the warranty anyway.....

It is pretty easy to work out how a car has been treated, you pretty much work it all out.

Futuras are the best value, coupla hundred more then an XT usually but you guaranteed cruise control, alloys, extra colour coding and full power windows, if i had to buy a cheap car id buy a BA mark II futura with under 40kays for about 14 - 15 grand, unbeatable value.

Yes, the XR's and Ghia's demand a premium. Futura's are possibly the best value in the entire range. More features than a XR, but goes without the fancy stuff in a Ghia like climate control.

That's what I intend doing, hopefully in the next month or two. I paid $14,800 for my 04 plate BA XT a year ago, but it had 77,000klm. That was thru Fowles.

IMHO the Govt fleet auctions are the only way to buy a late model car. Stuff lining the pockets of a car shark.

The trouble is "you just dont know how Govt cars have been treated," some may have been treated fine,....... but they may also be the exeption.

I work for a very large Govt dept who go through cars like running water, they generally get shoved off to Auction after about 20-30k..........I see how they get treated in that short life with the dept..............."thrashed, thrashed and then thrashed again, unwashed, never polished" and generally treated like _ _ _ _ ("you know what.")

Not for me thanks, you can have them.

Too right, and the condition usually reflects this. I trawled the auctions when searching for my BA. The prices looked ok on paper but the cars were (generally) in very very poor condition considering their low ks and young age. I was shocked and dissapointed with the vast majority of cars I saw. dents, scratches, water smells, cigarette smells, filthy dirty, 1 service in 40,000km etc etc seemed to be the norm.
I ended up finding (private sale) a mint 1 owner, garaged, BA SR, with 14000km for $18500, and was more than happy to pay the extra $1000 or so over the auction price.

Yep, sounds like where I work as well. The cars are all pool cars, so they aren't assigned to the one driver, it's the same as buying a rental.

Mind you, if you know what to look out for, the auctions are the way to go, I've never bought a car from a dealer. I got my Au3 Fairmont at fowles in January 06. When I first saw it, it looked immaculate, with a good report, but the mileage put me off a bit (191,000 k's). However, when it went up, the starting price soon changed that, I took it home for $7100!. Only thing for the roady was 2 back tyres. I've done 30,000 in it so far & I've had no probs at all, however it was previously a stock agent's car, all highway miles. The same day I got mine, a very rough Egas BA with 175000 up, went for $14500! (taxi boys got that one)

Not for me thanks, you can have them.

I think you will find alot of cars that come through are on novated leases, in addition to the traditional "fleet", thats why there are fewer XT's and Futura's and lots more Ghia's and XR's. Yes there are some shite cars that come through, but there are also some gems. Historically, NSW Dept of Education (country), Riverina Health, RTA (to name a few) keep their cars in pristine condition.

You can easily pick a good car from a bad one - just takes a bit of time and care. I will tell you when my new car comes and I send the current one to auction if you like :voldar02:

PS: Where do you think 95% of the second hand Falcons come from that Ford dealers advertise in the papers?? I see the Canberra Ford and Holden dealers at the auctions every week. All they do is drive it onto their lots and add $5k.
