Nothing will ever be as hot as the ~ three/four days of 40+ during the Black Saturday fires when i lived in Beechworth, VIC. it was 40 at midnight in Wangaratta at the time. Yesterday's wind was awful, only hit 37 or so in SE Melbourne. Jan will bring some interesting heat waves.

Not my thing either. I went out early this morning to get through a job before it got too hot. Didn't seem to be many people on the roads either. Looking like we might get some rain pretty soon though.

Sitting on my patio sinking a few beers I'm watching thunderstorm tonight; the garden & lawn is getting rain, and the light show is spectacular, perfect finish for a hot day in Melbourne.
Cheers |

Absolutely gorgeous weather!! And almost back to the days of “proper” summers while growing up.
So much better than freezing ya balls off and battling the below zero wind straight off Antartica..

I have to disagree! Love the cool blasts of the Canterbury Plains. In Australia, had I time off right now, I’d be in a chalet atop Ben Lomond.

we usually cycle between El Nino and La Nina every 3-4 years but we fortunately had cooler/wetter Summers over the last 2 years as well. The sea temps over the pacific Ocean are in a constant shift pattern effecting the different sides of the Pacific during Summer. Back in 2019 I was working for a guy who was responsible for organizing the fire fighting helicopter deployment for Australia's bush fire season. He told me with great certainty they don't bring in the equipment based on what Australia's BOM tell them but work with the CSIRO and US National Ocean Services who forecast patterns based on the Southern Oscillation Cycle. Good read for those interested.....https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/ninonina.html Spend most of the last month 'flailing" around in the south Pacific helping bringing a yacht home to Oz. So this phenomena really interests me.

The native plant life is really taking a beating out here!
Set up a crude water mister for the ponies yesterday morning. It amused them for a while. About 2pm they were out in the 42d heat & laying around sun baking at times. I keep one of the rain water taps, on a constant drip into a stainless bowl. Large rock in the middle for smaller birds, that might fall in. Went & checked it after lunch......... 12 Magpies flew off! must be some sort of truce happening with them. Betty's gang went to their main tree & the rest disappeared. Thats it , i give up on trying to understand Maggie protocol! |
