I believe it's cooking them in the oven to soften the adhesive so the casings can be opened. Once open, the internals can be painted/blacked-out etc.
Then you glue them back up again. Works with some headlamps but not with others depending on the plastics and adhesives used. It can also be an expensive flop. I'm a chicken so I'd never try it. There's plenty of guides on the web if you Google for it. |

yeah, pretty straight forward, you take the headlights out of your car, take out the bulbs and wiring, place it on the oven at roughly 135 degrees (the heat makes the glue become all soft) then pull apart the plastic cover on the front and spray the desired parts black, its a cheap mans way of customizing the headlights
I Just had trouble with splitting the front cover off, it seems that the plastic is too hard and isn't flexible enough :( |

Imagine your xr6 lights all silver. The blacked out bit does make 'em mean.
To buy this part pre-blacked out factory is an arm and a leg. Baking, separating and painting the vacuum metalised base black costs all of $20 all up. I too am totally gutless when it comes to doing this!!!! I wanna, and even install a set of those daylight LED rings etc, but I'll wait 'till I find a cheap one on ebay, just in case!

The reason i want to bake the headlights is so that my Focus is different from everyone elses and if someone admires it then they cant just log onto ebay and buy one they have to go to all the trouble that i went through:. Plus i like doing things to my car, i am very DIY |

Glue used on the South African Focuses don't separate, suited to hotter climates. European sourced lights don't have the problem.

The XR5 was mixed and matched headlights between LS/LT models. I mean there was a batch without any rear window controls.
