Each state has it's own number plates & offer serveral sizes & colours etc. You can either get what you're given or pay to choose a combination of letters &/or numbers as long as no one else has them in your state & it's not deemed offensive so the only way of knowing when a car was made is by checking the compliance plate.
Check http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/myrta/myplates/index.html for New South Wales's if you are interested |

In SA generally by the letter and number combination on it, ie; XDC 322 and XDC 987, basically the second plate is newer, but, a re-registered car that has been written off gets brand new plates, and we are almost out of new plates to hand out. Dunno about any of the other states, never really bothered to look

Most of the other states I can understand, the ascending number and letter combination is chronological. Except I haven't figured out the Victorian system yet.
To answer the question though, there is no direct correlation between the rego number and a cars age unlike the english system.

Vic rego is easy if you stay with standard Plates.
Starts at AAA 000 and goes up. Once its hits AAA 999 it goes AAB 000 and so on and so on. Once they run out of Letters and Numbers they tend to change colour of the writing or plate. Example White writing on Black Green writing on White Blue writing on White. Kev.

New South Wales ran out of 3 letter 3 number combinations so have gone to 2 letter 2 number 2 letter combo eg. AA00AA, but just gives an idae of when re registered after being out of rego

Your system is really simple
Incase anyone is interested this is how the english one works ![]() right the first two letters symbolise where it was registered e.g. linclonshire or pembruckshire technically which county. the two numbers are for the two months each new reg comes out so each september a 50 reg comes out and the last number after the 50 e.g. 5(1) is for the year it was registered. 2001. and then in march when the next new reg comes out it is an '0' number so again say in march 2002 the reg would be '02'. and then the last three letteres are just selected randomly
