in QLD when on holidays i tried to buy P plates so my girlfreind could have a drive of the rental car,
no such thing up there, so why do Victoria and other states need them? yeah L plates are a good idea but how often do you see some clown driving as if they have no experience and dont have P plates. what is the point of them, a cop attractent or a way of letting us know theres a cute driver possibilty? |

A little from column A, and a little from column B.
It's just a stupid law left over from the stone ages. Absolutely NO use for them.

More to the point, why do we need seperate road rules for each state?

As there are speed restrictions placed on a P Plater, displaying the P's allows other drivers to recognise these restrictions.

i just moved down from QLD and up there you dont have to display P Plates at all not even L plates, but now im in SA and i have to display my P Plates :(, its BS, theres really no need for them, except the fact P Platers arnt allowed to do 110 on the freeway, which sux because when i moved down i was still on QLD licence and did 110-115 everyday to get to work and back, and since changeing my licence over to SA i am only allowed to go 100 on the freeway now :(. its crap, but i guess its the rules and no matter what state your in theres some rule that will stop you from doing what Open licence drivers can do. but i guess display a P Plate doesnt make it any different to as if i was in QLD and not displaying one. QLD P Plates for 3 years, SA P Plates for 2 years, catch 22 wherever you go.

Get pulled over by an RBT, get asked to speak into one of those breath test machines.
Can I see your licence please? Speak your name and address into the machine. Oh you are a provisional driver? Shouldn't you be displaying your plates? PING!

i dont think that failing to display P plates should attract demerit points though, just a fine would suffice. |

Yeah honestly why did those changes come about that made no Ps a 3point offence as well s increasing the fines and limits in everything else?
And dont even start with the 5point per year limit! They just snuck it past with only a handbook at the Vicroads offices and then expcted everyone to know this as if they hang out at Vicroads. Another BS "Get tough" piece of legislation given to us by the Bracks Government to make them look as if they actually do ANTYHING towards effective road safety. And the only people who even know about it are the young drivers on the streets getting pulled over for no other reason than being young. |

Yeah it's just a signal for the people driving around P platers to let us know you are still in a learning phase.
I don't know about you, but that was where most of my learning took place (all those years ago when you only had your Ps for 1 year). Being on my Ls was learning how to drive to pass the test, when I got on my Ps I learned the real road rules ![]() Also as Casper said, it's a signal for the cops to pull you over and have an excuse to check you out/test you/harrass you. And it is a bugger that now this phase lasts for 3 years now. I feel for all the P platers now, it's unfair. Cos no matter what you do and how good a driver you are, they still hassle you. I followed Brent at the NSW FF meet up to Bathurst and he didn't do anything wrong, but I can betcha that if we had all been pulled over by the cops, he would've been one of the first to get in the crap cos of the little sign next to his number plate.

I Believe the very question is under reveiw in QLD at the moment. As of the 1st of January 2005 it is now compulsary to display an L plate, and they are currently trying to bring back the compulsary P plate

I am a driver trainer since 1987 and I am at a loss as to the need to display P Plates, IMHO they serve no useful purpose whatsoever. Just a revenue raiser for the Government.
Can someone please convince me of the safety aspects of displaying P Plates, L Plates makes sense but not P Plates. And in Victoria, 3 demerit points for not showing them, that is the same as going through a Stop sign, or a red light for christ sake. You can see the safety benifit in Red/Stop infringements, but P Plates!!! In this day and age of computerisation, every Police car has access to someones details in seconds. Give me a break. We don't need them!

I can understand all the ankst from young people with P's and the rules that go with it , but most of those rules exist because , as you know , you guys have the worst fatality rate.
As bindi said above , L's is passing the test . Having P's is the learning curve to see if you can keep youthful exuberance in check long enough to survive or god forbid, avoid an accident or even death. Going to an advanced driving course makes you aware of what to look for and how to better handle your car . It doesn't make you a good driver. Like most things in life , it comes from years of driving on the roads , although there are the exceptions . After all the years driving , its amazing how good you actually get at pre empting stupid human behaviour. As for the coppers targeting you , who knows what they're thinking.
