Im pretty sure authorities in Australia cant do much about the emails. They don't really care because no fraud has taken place yet. They might care once its done but then its too late to ever get your money back

As long as they have paid you, and the money is in your bank, it's up to them to organise picking it up and shipping it, as long as you have nominated "pick up only" in your advert, as you should. They're the ones who have lost out if they now try to scam you...you've got thier money.
It doesn't leave your premises until you've been paid in full.

Yeah mate, wouldn't go with it, definatley a scam! Had the sane thing happen to me when I was trying to sell my old bike. Not a fan of PayPal, as someone else said they'll bend over backwards for the buyer, and don't really care about the seller.

i get these emails and text messages all the time for the cars i am selling.
they ask to pay with paypal then send you a doctored fake paypal reciept to tell you they payed $500 more than the asking price and they want you to pay $500 to clear the funds.
login to paypal and there will be no record of a transaction.
these are fairly simple scams.

If its a direct deposit into your bank account
Yeah thats fair game
But seriously as mentioned if your off shore or overseas its a little harder to be portraid as legit
Some buyers as you discover prefer paypal as that then gives the buyer some come back , if a bank direct deposit goes sour
I sold some rims a while ago , that were "pick up" only and direct deposit prefered, no paypal
Well the wombat who bought the rims, paid via paypal (for which i had then to pay there fees)
And then expected me to deliver the rims
Needless to say after 12 months the rims are here , well they were till the weekend when they went to the tip

If You receive an email from paypal or ebay that you you think is suss, for ward the email without any alterations to spoof @ ebay.com.au or spoof @ paypal .com.au and wait for a reply. They will let you know if its genuine or not.As I said dont write your own story or heading as they need to trace any links.I hope this will help everyone.

They have been using this old chestnut for years. They pickup the car asap after paying with the stolen paypal account. Your car is gone and then Paypal reverse the transaction a day or 2 later leaving you with a nice negative balance. Usually if it smells a little fishy it is. Always trust your gut i reckon.

I'm hoping that is a joke? The oil rig story is also a widely used scam.

Cool Re: ebay scam?

HI all
Whats stopping you from getting the money put into your paypal account
like they want to do and as soon as its in there
you remove it and then complete the deal with the broker/pickup agent
if they still want to go ahead with the deal
and you keep the original amount
would that work?
just a thought
I left a reply on another part of the pub about scams
check that out
John

i would still be careful if i was you mate, go through with the sale but don't take any chances.
always check mother sites such as paypal and your bank for the funds, never believe an emailed reciept of funds as they are too easy to copy the headers from paypal and other sources.
there seems to be alot of people writing comments up that maybe you can scam the scammer by taking the funds out straight away or any other way.
its not possible, better off just ignoring them altogether.
alot of scams aren't to just get your money but to get your details etc, be careful what details you give out as it doesn't take much to steal an id

Sorry to be negative but the guy "working on an offshore oil rig" is another very old scam.

Even though you have a deposit, they gain your trust and arrange with you for someone (organised their end) to pick the car up but an excuse for a late payment will be made followed by someone coming to pick up the car (hoping you will release it considering they are trust worthy) then the final payment is never made leaving you with a grand and no car.

So long as you do not release the car unless you have the full amount (pretty obvious) you'll be fine. However like I said, they are convincing and gain your trust just waiting for you to make a wrong move.

I had a similar thing happen when I sold my escort.
I had 2 seperate people that wanted to buy my car & offered me more than what it was worth. But both claimed to be living on an oil rig & couldnt inspect the car prior to purchase & they didnt have anyone that could pay cash because it was a suprise present for their mum (an escort rolling shell that needs resto would make a great present for any mum).

they claimed to have a transport company that would pick it up & they wanted to only use Pay Pal not COD as specified.

When I questioned them about transport companies not uaually picking up cars that could not move under their own power, the communication stopped.

Nedless to say I saw scam written all over it & reported it to Pay Pal aswell.

i had the same scam when selling my dads ek, im on a oil rig and can't come have a look, then he was going to pay through paypal and pay askin price plus all fee's, i was asking $4500 but he offered $5500 to cover fee's, same story about there agent aswell, anyway i gave him my paypal details and they put what looked like money in there when i checked it there was a extra $700 in there and he asked if i could please resend him the $700 through a western union account so he could pay his agent.

basically i knew it was a scam but just wanted to see where it went, they didnt get anything from me but there would be poeple that they would scam easily.

Mate there is a few diffrent ways they will try and scam you with paypal some will leave you a few hundred worse off some will leave your bank account wiped all end in you losing your money and not selling the car.

Do not click on ANY link she sends you, if you really want to keep picking the bait tell her you will only accept a bank cheque in the mail or a telegraphic bank transfer to a account you do not use much.

It's not worth the risk, have you tried carsales.com.au?

I have had nothing but good experiences from that site, selling and buying..

Mate its a scam. Its happened to me on 3 seperate occations. They mention paypal but truth is nothing is done through paypal. You will not see any funds and you will not recieve any credit.
They will send you an email which will go straight to you junk folder in you emails copying the paypal logo pretending to be them but there email address is the 1st give away.

If you are still unconvinced, next step is to say to them that you are interested and blah blah blah, they will then allegedly deposit the amount into your account but its not "visible". At this point they request you to deposit X amount of dollars in the "shipping line" to release your funds which is exactly the point of the scam. You as the seller will fork out X amount of dollars expecting the $$$ to appear in paypal and BOOM you've been stung.

My advise is have a bit of fun with them and waste there time. Let her know your looking for a wife and is she single? lol
