I will throw my opinion out.

If currently own a car keep it until get full license. If don't and can't use relatives car or public transport buying a cheap car.

Because of the risk of no insurance is too big. You won't get 3rd party insurance. So if you hit someone, you have to pay for it with your money, insurance won't pay for anything. And if you have seen how small it can be to write off a car you will understand that.

The price might be tempting now for the car but over time the price doesn't go up, it goes down.

It is a handsome looking car, but a huge negative for me and almost the reason I didn't buy one a few years ago was the rear bar. Nice external exhaust in the rear bar, until you look closer - and see the tiny pipes coming out the back. Such a disappointment.

Wonder if it torque steers like the MPS. Im not a big fan of the 6MPS (still not a bad car) more prefer the 3MPS but if the price is right why not.

Would an AWD car torque steer?

I'm pretty sure they can shift torque between front/rear axles in the 6MPS.

It's an AWD and I haven't felt torque steer even with some spirited acceleration

(On some private property, of course)

Those pipes are a STRANGE decision - however I do like the quietness. NO silly burbling (Cars that drone annoy me)

No discernible torque steer when I took one for a test drive. I'm sure it shuffled most of the drive to the rear wheels under heavy acceleration.

Yeah might be AWD but still either a front/rear split of 100:0 or 50:50, so its still a front biased system.
Im not taking anything away from the car at all, but it doesnt do anything for me as i said id prefer the 3MPS, but if the price were right.

i almost bought a 6mps a few years ago - it was going for the right price (from a relo) and at the right time.

unfortunately the family held onto it for a few months longer than they were going to and i bought a house in that time - my wife thought a new house was more important than a new car

still a nice looking car though, and it went pretty damn well (took it for a test drive around the vineyards in the hunter valley)

The way the AWD works in the 6 MPS is seamless, you don't noticed the variable distribution. Dump the clutch in the wet and it just launches in a straight line. Great at putting power down in the twisties too. It's a much more complete car than the 3MPS.

From my ownership experience the things I didn't like were that it needed more mumbo and he traction control was too intrusive when you finally get it to activate.

Wouldent the maintainance costs and repair bills be horrendous? Ive heard mazda's are pretty cheap until they break down (which is quite often)

Interesting thread. The 6 mps is something I'm considering in future as a daily that's semi quick and yet classy and cheap to run. I have always loved the look of them too. They just look more muscular compared to the garden variety 6.

Why do you think they break down often? One of the selling points (for me) for Mazda was reliability. I had a 6 MPS , my wife had a MX5. Both cars never had a single issue. My immediate family have late model Mazdas too and 0 issues. Servicing costs are in line with other cars.

The 6 MPS is an orphan, produced low volume for around 3 years. So as they age some parts will become an issue to source I'd imagine.

I have always loved the styling since they first came out but could never afford one. They still look modern to me. And they are affordable and semi quick and reliable I think they are a good buy.

Correct, like anything if maintained correctly it will live. A guy i know on ozmps (Forum owner) has about 180k kms on his 3MPS its had some mods tune etc. And it still goes hard.
Some parts will be hard to get for the 6MPS your right, engine parts shouldnt be too bad though.

We give the MPS a lot of curry on XR5 forums (purely banter though) i hate to admit it but they are a nice car (older one not the smiley) yeah the 3MPS does torque steer but so does my focus (only a little) after a tune

I am not saying i think the MPS is a bad in any way i just cant see what makes it attractive to alot of people... (granted i am not the type of person who likes the direction Toyota Took after 2000)

What i am saying is that this car does not appeal to me.

Not really just one thread, ive been on alot of forums and it always seems a car that people recommend, i only know Toyota's and Fords so it confuses me as to why everyone likes it.

Just has never really stood out on any level for me at all

No it's higher risk level has nothing to do with having 2doors, insurance pricing is based on much mote than that.

Heh, I wouldn't trust me either. I tried a cheap shot to see if I could get someone to take the bait.

Its a fairly fast hot hatch (MPS 3) with some luxury and cool features, the second generation one is more toned down though (torque limiter up to 3rd gear I think) so it won't snap your wrists like the older one. MX5 is more of a drivers car same with RX8.

It makes me laugh that I can't drive these new turbo petrol 4 cylinder doodads for fuel economy, but I can turbo diesel (I have a TDCI Focus

), change out the intercooler, blades in the turbo to the bigger 52mm ones, cold air intake, up boost to 18psi, remove torque limiter on first and second and now all the sudden I can move fairly quickly and change lanes with no hands on the wheel.

But ye olde' 302 Wheezer from a 90s Falcon is banned, even though my WS Fiesta would probably hand its *** to it.

i bought my turbo and registered and insured it in NSW while on my P's. however i was not legally aloud to drive it so i insured it in my dads name for 3 months. and that 7 points hurts... i got it 2 days before my full license dont take the chance if you do buy it just let the old man drive it for a couple of months

I reckon that list is based on a 'status symbol' rather than over all power. Like a typical young fella will get more 'Respekt' from his peers with a turbo powered car over a grandpa taxi falcon. I dunno, this is pure speculation, but they gov could be looking at it from that aspect. In the end, any car can be used dangerously in the hands of the inexperienced.
