Quick Set Cement is an issue. And allegedly responsible for many failures with gal poles. It's not talked about, because many installers have used Quick set. The admixture to speed up setting of concrete mix is the issue..
Don't go timber. Too much shrinkage and warping these days from fast grown plantations. Plus bigger diameter than steel required, when selecting from Specification tables. The only enquiry I made with a local Timber yard gave me a price of about $1000. Equivalent Gal pole was only about $200 (stock pole, cap and welded in hook with cold gal paint on weld.
