when eva it feels like it. has done it hot and cold and on varying length drives. oh yeah and the mongrel wont start when its hot sometimes its like the starter soleniod is too hot cause once the starter motor cools it starts perfectly

check the battery connections and the alternator connections...I had a problem like this once and the car just wanted to die, it was a poor connection to the alternator.

I was gonna say it could be your coil or fuel pump on the way out, but I could be wrong....

hey guys, love your work by the way.
im the newbie on the block, just herd there was an e series owners club and asked where i sign up. ive got an 88 ea fairmont ghia with alot of work put into it and i love the ole beast. just reading through this thread here and i have the same sorta problem, at idle it surges to 1000 rpm then down to about 300 and almost konks then back up again, puttin it in nutural and givin it and tap on the accelerator usualy gets its story straight and then it sits there purrin like a kitten. it only does it at certain times and its got me beat, i thought it might be an air leak at the idle speed control regulator, then i replaced the ecu, still doin it. its not puffin smoke or missin or anything it just seems to surge in revs. hope u guys know cause im stumped. |

ok this is what you gotta do take the negative off the battery for 10 mins, while ur waiting get a can of carbie clean clean out your throttle body take off your ISC, idle speed controler, spray the carbie clean in it get it real clean re-fit the ISC. Re-connect the battery, start it up hop in the car go 2 mins in park, 2 mins in park with ac on, 2 mins in drive, 2 mins in drive with ac on. make sure to turn steering wheel every now and then, this helps the pcm to adapt to the loads. fords are good design engine they are made to adapt to engine wear and conditions but sometimes there can be things not acounted for, the reason your car has probly developed this problem is possibly a bad earth of check the possitive to the battery any problems there can make the pcm forget from no battery power.

ok guys thanks for your help on this i had some spare time today so i took a look at this issue alternator wiring is so dodgee the clip wasnt even locked on (have no idea who touched that either) and the bolt on wire is ready to break off(me thinks some serious hours maintainence tomorrow will be required. replaced the spark pug leads as these were still the old motocraft ones(possibly original with the car so i dont think anyone has ever changed them). a couple of injector plugs were sus so they were cleaned and put back on and its running 100% better now maybe i will get some economy back i miss my 11.8L/100 round town she used to give up till a month ago, not bad from an engine which has 260000 on the clock. original engine as come out of the austech factory.
