Anyone have any idea how heavy an LSD diff would weigh?
I need to send mine back to Melbourne from up in NSW for a warranty repair. I'm scared of how much it will cost!

I just had Toll Express {via general freight transport 1 standard pallet x 70cms high from Melbourne to Gosford. On it is an EL engine complete, a 3.45 LSD complete disc to disc, a steering rack complete and a couple of cardboard boxes of parts, for under $150. They weren't interested too much in the weight, just the size. They deliver/pickup from business addresses only, or to nearest depot, but the service is spot on and way cheaper than all other quotes. I guessed the pallet at 250kg all up and think I was a bit light, but that was only because they needed a forklift equipped truck to pick it up. I'm not sure whether you mean diff centre or complete assy so I wont try to guess the weight, either way get a price from Tolls and don't even think of post or courier "pay by weight" if you're concerned with high cost.
Ps How'd you get a photo of my wife for your avatar? Cheers, Paul |

Damn, thats a lot cheaper than I thought, considering you have an engine plus the diff plus parts!
It will be a complete assembly disc to disc. I'd guess around 70-80 kegs. Thanks for the info...why only business addresses though? I can't move it anywhere from my place easily...I'll speak to TOll and see what they say...thanks again! P.S. She's just my bit on the side! :

Don't know whether to post here or FM. LOL
As it's not on a pallet wrap/pack the rotors with bags or the like. I hear what you're saying about "easily" but if you could get it to your work place or local garage/ mates shop etc that'd save you money. I think they may have a depot in Nowra, not to sure. The reason they do it [bus address only] is the pickup from a private address is done by their courier/express divn at much, much higher rates. Just another way of milking John Public when he's stranded. I was in the National Auto Parts trade for many years and asking for General Freight is one of the tricks of that trade. Takes a little longer but at a fraction of the price, so it's worth the extra effort. Any registered business will do, put the hard word on your regular business contacts eg service station. Best wishes, Paul PS on closer inspection, she's not my wife, her hair's shorter! |

Well, I pulled the diff out this morning (only took 2 hours!) and weighed it. Approx 40 kegs without the axle shafts and fluid.
I went to TNT and spoke to them. Was going to cost $112...not to bad I thought. Then I found out the company I work for has an account with them, so I got another quote with the account number...and it came to a grand total of $40! Score! So I'm happy! Thanks for the help Paul

Scotsman,
It's all good then, my first quote was $300 odd but my golf partner has an account with Tolls [he's a courier] hence the drop to $126 incl. forklift for pickup! Big savings and only 3 working days point to point. Glad you got it sorted and thanks Barthez, I was sure I'd seen a yard there on the way south, Ecojet's info was pretty close too. Cheers, Paul |
