Done.
I was looking forward to a nice shady spot in the new grandstand, but now I'll just have to persevere with my sombrero.

Your kidding me right. The old stand was meant to be looked after by the Racing Club, they didn't do it for years even after ACC condemned the stand. The State Govt & Vic' Park are complete liars. What cheeses them off is the whole thing is owned by the City Council & there ain't nothing they can do about it.

Also, why should taxpayers, local & state subsidise the Clipsal race & the Jockey Club ? Think about that. The people that will make money on it won't fund it's future upkeep, just like what is happening now with the maintenance of Victoria Park, all paid for by the Adelaide City Council. There is nothing in the local govt act that says they have to fund 'entertainment events' on this scale.

I worked at the ACC when the old stand was condemned, council begged the jockey club to look after it. Suggest you drop in and have a look at it, see the state of disrepair, it was so bad it couldn't even be heritage listed 15 years ago. Sorry for the rant but it will cost the ratepayers in Adelaide a lot for years to come.

What he seems to be saying is let those who make the money off it fund it. Why should tax payers with no interest in racing have to fund something they dont use, which third parties make money off? Its one thing for council to make lands available, even provide initial capital, but surely the promoters and third parties making money off it need to take responsibility for the costs of upkeep. It shouldnt be an ongoing taxpayer expense to fund a private business.

If its not viable for the promoters, then the track has no future. Unless Im missing something.

To put it another way, would you like your wages garnished to fund my business?

Exactly 100% correct. Look at why the Grand Prix was turfed, besides the licence fee to that pommy bloke... once the arguement about permanent grandstands came up, that was the end of the race. Clipsal revheads just love Adelaide to bits because so much of the infrastructure is provided unlike a race track. Just like the GP, only large contracting companies mostly owned by shareholders or interstate firms benefit from the race. The city of Adelaide retail sector doesn't have cash raining down on them when this race is on, quite the opposite actually.

Mind you, the state government has been illegally building on the parklands for decades - it's the city council that own the parklands btw.

Blaming the state Gov & SAJC? The only issue with Vic Park is the ACC, the usless bunch of anti development activists-i.e joke of a body-who is persuaded buy a bunch of parkland lovers with a vendetta against anything newer than the horse & plough. The SAJC/Race track area is unaccessable currently, how is developing perminant stands any encroach onto the public use of the parklands.

ACC needs to have their powers to vito developments in the CBD removed.
