Thumbs up EF Transmission Fluid

Christine, the EF Machine, needs a top up on Transmission Fluid for the auto. What brand or type of fluid would be the best way to go?

engine oil really depends on the condition of your motor. if its old and worn then get something a bit thicker. i personally like Shell oils in my fords but i cant say that its any better or worse than another brand though. maybe its just the yellow bottle it comes in?
also try and stick with the same oil in your engine for the life of the engine. just a tip ive gotten from a few mechs

Yeah I've heard the same about sticking to the same oil. Good tip. She's done 195,000 k's which is within the average so she's not overly old. (Although I honestly don't know how cars get so many k's for a 10 year old car! My old toyota 'rolla has done 200,000 over 20 years!)

How so is it different 250?

I ended up getting Valvoline Dexron III today from Repco, hope it does a good job.

it goes in where the dipstick goes in doesnt it? or if you can really be bothered there should be a plug on the side of the gearbox that you can fill through.

THe autos with the dip stick only have that to put fluid in.. espect about 4-4.5 liters if you have just droped the pan and changed the filter...

How strange. You'd think they would have made the dipstick a bit bigger in that case.

Thanks again guys
Much appreciated!

Not really, most transmissions fill from the dipstick and most mechanics have a funnel.

The nozzle on most oil pumps also fits straight it.

Default Um... NO

Guys i hope you realise that ford automatic transmissions require different fluid to regular Dextron3. This was a major problem with Ford for warranty claims with the EF series, hence on the EL series they removed the dipstick to prevent "conciencious motorists" from buying dex3 from their local servo and topping up their trans, and hence destroying it.

Im pretty sure you will find the Castrol TQ95 is the correct auto trans oil for ford BTR automatic transmissions.

I used it in my EL and have maintained perfectly smooth shifting and operation.

Dex3 might be fine for a 3 speed auto, but on the electronic 4 speed I would not put anything other then 95LE.

Drain out = remove sump to dump 85% - %90 of it, the rest diluted will not be of much concern, otherwise it needs a full flush if you 99% removal.
