Default 2029, possible comet impact.

I saw this in the paper a few years back and the recent doomsday thread reminded me about it.

At the moment there is a 97.8% chance it won't hit but every update done on it shows that it is more likely to impact earth.

http://www.space.com/scienceastronom...sk_041224.html

Does anyone have more information about this?

The rating for that comment was lowered to a 0 (or no chance) in like 2005 or 2006 or something. It went up on their hazard scale then went back down.

I assume you're talking about this one...?

http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/apophis/

NASA's near earth objects site is probably the best source of information.

I volunteer for the 2029 space mission to land on it and blow it up with a nuke, barely missing the earth and saving the day.

It doesnt matter how old Chuck Norris is, and he wont need a nuke, he'll just karate chop the asteroid in half.

He'll round house kick it into the next universe, consequently setting the comet on a new path that will destroy the only other planet supporting a booming population of peace loving Aliens...the only other proof of life in the Universe thus reinforcing his status as the only supreme being period.
And he would do this all while making love to a beautiful Brunette named Suzanne.

OH and another thing....Chuck Norris won't be 89...89 will be Chuck Norris!!!

get a big photo of 'lady mucca' (paul mccartney's recently divorced wife) and show it to any asteroid that dares to come within an inch of our solar system and it'll soon buggar off, with it's tail between its legs.

on a serious note though. i always felt that the world would end when the moon finally succumbs to our atmosphere and crashes into us.

There's no need to worry, it's Earth's gravity you need to worry about not our atmosphere for the moon to succumb, and our moon is escaping our gravity's force at ~4cm per year. There could come a day when our moon escapes Earth's orbit, that could be a race between it and our Sun going Super Nova...

Now, if you were living on Mars around about 50 million years or so from now, you'd be forgiven if you were to fear Mars's moon Phobos falling on your head.

Schoolboy corrects NASA's asteroid figures
Wednesday Apr 16 09:46 AEST
A 13-year-old German schoolboy corrected NASA's estimates on the chances of an asteroid colliding with Earth, a German newspaper has reported, after spotting the boffins had miscalculated.

Nico Marquardt used telescopic findings from the Institute of Astrophysics in Potsdam (AIP) to calculate that there was a 1 in 450 chance that the Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth, the Potsdamer Neuerster Nachrichten reported.

NASA had previously estimated the chances at only 1 in 45,000 but told its sister organisation, the European Space Agency (ESA), that the young whizzkid had got it right.

The schoolboy took into consideration the risk of Apophis running into one or more of the 40,000 satellites orbiting Earth during its path close to the planet on April 13 2029.

Those satellites travel at 3.07 kilometres a second at up to 35,880km above earth — and the Apophis asteroid will pass by earth at a distance of 32,500km.

If the asteroid strikes a satellite in 2029, that will change its trajectory making it hit earth on its next orbit in 2036.

Both NASA and Marquardt agree that if the asteroid does collide with earth, it will create a ball of iron and iridium 320m wide and weighing 200 billion tonnes, which will crash into the Atlantic Ocean.

The shockwaves from that would create huge tsunami waves, destroying both coastlines and inland areas, whilst creating a thick cloud of dust that would darken the skies indefinitely.

The 13-year old made his discovery as part of a regional science competition for which he submitted a project entitled: Apophis — The Killer Astroid.

Take out a $500000000000000000 loan from the bank 2 days before 2029 and go nuts.

Now if the comet misses, well, Damn.

Lawyers are a very resilient species.
With ruthless cunning, they stalk their prey, immobilise them with the use of law, and empty their pockets, before scurrying away to their burrows, known as "mansions".

always thought the moon was looking a bit closer than, to as when, i was a kid. news to me that it's getting further away.

whenever there's a major astronomical event going on, it's always cloudy in britain and we miss it.

so god help us if an astreoid strikes- no buggar in the uk will see it. (well if you're going to go, may aswell go in style)

The Apollo 11 mission placed a laser array on the moon (so if those man didn't land on the moon believers can explain that one to me, I'd love to hear it) in which, if you have the right equipment, can bounce a laser off and measure its distance from Earth. So from 1969, measurements have been taken that suggest that the moon is moving away at ~4cm/year. I think Apollo 14 and 15 also added additional arrays, from memory.

Come back in 20 or so years, lots of clear blue sky here in Sydney. I'll let give you a heads up on when to go grab your surfboard. :P
