Default Premium Sound ate my CDs

Well, the cars 2nd (fitted 2003) Premium Sound 6-stacker has become hungry and eaten 5 CDs...

Tried to eject some yesterday and it threw a wobbly, and continued 'whirring' as if it was trying to find the CDs, leading me to have to pull the fuse on it.

Popped the fuse back in tonight to give it another go, and the whirring continued for 10 secs then stopped, and once I had typed the code in, the radio is working fine, but the unit does not recognise the fact it has 5 CDs in in, as the little CD symbols are all blank on the screen !

An no - I'm not interested in replacing it, just a) getting my CD's back and b) some way of fixing it cheaply.

It's had a little hissy fit before and spat CDs out when switching from radio to CD, accepted 2 CD's in the same tray when loading and to cap it all off sometimes when you turn it on, the subwoofer 'pops' and does not come on, leaving me with Prestige Sound, instead of Premium.

Any ideas guys and girls ?

Take it to a quality audio place. I had mine fixed once for $80, I say once because it did it again 12 months later and I cracked the sads with it and got a replacement.

I have an AU3 Fairmont and my Premium sound did the exact same... being a skinflint I thought I would see what I could do to fix it before i paid someone (logic being: it was already broken).
After getting the unit out of the dash, I pulled the top off it. There are two little electric motors, one in each of the back inside corners of the unit. They work in sync and act like an elevator motor, raising and lowering the CDs as required. One them had died and refused to be resuscitated... so I replaced the whole thing with an ASL unit which (touch wood) has worked flawlessly since.
While i had the top off the unit i was able (with some careful jiggling) to reclaim my CDs... altho I am reliably told that ASL are very good and take great care to return them to you when they do the changeover.

Russell, where did you get your unit fixed for $80, and what exactly was replaced (if you remember) ??

Cheers.

Thanks - I think I'll be shop around as had a quote for $300 to replace the whole guts of the unit, and thought it a little steep for an 8 year old stereo.

Anyway, the car will be going sometime this year and be replaced with something newer... in my heart it would be a AU series 3 XR8, but in reality it will probably be a 4 cylinder something-or-other :-(
