Cool Exhaust Mod Idea ...loudness control

After a lot of thought about whether or not to get rid of the reso and get some real noise out of the EF, why not have the best of both worlds!

I want the car louder so I'd like it off.
But I do do long distance travelling sometimes and droning is something I can do without.
And running round cutting it off n welding it back later would be a waste...

So I came up with this idea...

- Cut the piping on each side of the resonator
- Weld exhaust flange setups to the setup on the car, the reso each end, and to the 2.5" pipe each end.
- Then unbolt and swap reso and 2.5" pipe when desired.

This way I could have it drone free during long trips, and loud for other times.

What do you guys think?
Is it legal?
Has it been done before by anyone?
And where's a good cheap supplier of exhaust flanges n black 2.5" exhaust piping???

~ Matt

How about this for an approach. Just before the resonator, put in a "y" piece with a throttle body in it. At the flick of the switch, you can be sending gases down the 2.5" pipe, and flick back through the resonator.

A mate who used to have worked 5.0L VH had a swtich in the cabin which switched the way the exhaust gasses flowed so instead of going throught the mufflers etc it could be dumped straight out of the exhaust before all that stuff.

It was stupidly loud but very cool and im also guessing very illegal :Up_to_som

Yeah the throttle body setup also crossed my mind.

I'm just wondering if there would be enough room to have the deversion piping?

Flanges seem pretty expenisve from what ive looked at...$17 ea :S

hey mate i took out my resi (next to the tip) and only noticed drone in the mid range, once you hit like 100km/h (as i imagine you would do on your long trips) you wont get much drone

Wardy your all for the 'no resi' idea, you even tried to convince me but it failed.

That'd be fantastic heljas! Cheers mate.
I'll figure out how many I need first and get back to you.

I'm considering this idea more now...
Would only need 4 flanges.

Less pipe disection...more stability...less fiddly swapping them over...

Of course it would mean buying another tip too.

you should do the same thing for the muffler as well.. it would be good to be able to just bolt in straight pipes for going to the drags, and then bolt in the muffler and resonator for the street

If only my car was anywhere near drag spec :P

If I did get the chance to go to a drag day...wouldnt mind taking everything from the cat back off...then there'd be some noise ;)

I've seen this done and the practability is great. You can have a big muffler and 2" piping for the back for a stock sounding car, small muffler and 2"25 rear for a nice note and a straight through 2.5" for loudness.

With the straight through get like remote control exhaust silencer. Its like a reverse throttle body, with it being open normally but with a lever can be shut with a few holes drilled in it.

I saw something very very similar to this on an Alfa and it worked really well..

Although it was one big muffler, one side had straight through pipe, and the other side (inside) the muffler had a maze of pipes going back and forth..

flick a leaver and the gases are going through the straight through be makin it very loud, flick it the other way and the gases are goin through a maze of pipe and alot quieter..

and it looked like a slighter bigger version of a stock muffler with a little selector on the side..

I remember in old Street Machine magazines they advertised similar exhaust inserts a fair bit, that were cable operated from within the cabin, and would switch the exhaust from flowing to the mufflers, to sidepipes, or however you wanted to set it up. There's been a few cars in Zoom magazine recently with vacuum-operated setups that open when you get above xx PSI, then hold open for 3-5 seconds when boost drops between gears.

EF_Machine - It's not illegal to have flanges at each end of the muffler, but it could be illegal if the sound level is too high (or course). If you didn't want to do it yourself, any exhaust place could do this for under $100 I'd say.

Yeah at the rate im going I'd rather try it myself.
Be a good experience to do something myself to my car to.

I'll see what exhaust shops charge just out of curiousity

Do a search on Ebay for 'Exhaust Cutouts' which will give you a much better solution.
Or a search for the Apexi EVC.

You if you want to remove the resi or bypass it. Then you will sound like every other Commodore out there. It was the first mod since the VB came out.

If you want a louder note, change the whole system including extractors and mufflers.

you're dead right Dumpt

My other car ( EF 5 spd, LSD, chip, Pedders etc) has absolutely NO DRONE and is fitted with extractors, std cat, 21/2" mandrel pipework and only one muffler (Walker Ultrflo) and sounds great.

As for sounding like a Holden V6...... no way !

To me hotdogs seem like a glamorized bit of straight through pipe :P

I could be wrong...they might help deaden noise levels a little.
