Default Odd observations on a new VF

Maybe I am missing something but my brother took delivery of a band new VF SV6 today and I noticed that the wheel wells are lined in like material. The plastic and the steel has like a fabric over the top...WTF!

Is this something new and recent? Is it for noise reduction? All I see is that the debris that flys of the tyres would tear this to shreds even though it looks bonded to the plastic and metal.

It was already wet from the rain and muddy as hell. The car was 4 hrs old.

Took it for a drive and in all honesty nothing special. Choc packed with tech tough. But in the rain and cold here in Adelaide today the outside of the windscreen was fogging up from engine heat. Weird stuff, we had to use the wipers to remove the fog. Never ever seen that before.

Other car manufacturers like Audi/VW have been doing that for years, never seen an issue with them.

Sorry is this supposed to be funny of something?

Damn those holdens for making water fall from the sky causing tyres to get wet, making tyres/wheel wells wet and fogging up windscreens aye

No...he was clearly asking if anyone knew the reason and/or benefit of using the material in the wheel wells.....

To OP I have no idea but i'm interested to hear the idea behind it.

My old EL and the missus mondeo have the same problem with the wind screen.

This is generally caused but the windscreen temperature being below the dew point of the air outside the car. Typically when there's AC running on a rainy day- humid but not necessarily hot- and it's directed through the windscreen vents rather than the face or feet.

Easy to reproduce in both my Falcons.

I am very interested in this thread so thanks to the OP as surely we would like to know how a new VF is running and how any warranty issues are addressed.

As said the Euros including Mercs and BMW’s have had carpet material as sound deadening in the rear wells for years.

I find it very easy to clean, it always looks in good condition and it's as tuff as.

Much better than the effort it takes to keep the black plastic ones in good nick.

They should do the fronts as well.

Lots of brands (Japs/ Germans) have been doing it for a while. It is for sound deadening.

Mate of mine who worked for Audi in service said it was there as sound deadening, as well as stopping as much road spray (ie wet roads) from exiting the wheel arches and putting road grime on the body work.

The great thing is you don’t need to vacuum them, a jet or spray of water and they are clean. Maybe a quick scrub with a wheel brush if you’ve been driving through long grass but usually not. They’re much easier to clean and look after than the plastic stuff.

Wish I could upload photos from my phone. I was given the opportunity to drive a new GTS in Roxby yesterday. Great car but not worth 100k plus.

Yeap my old 2005 Mazda 6 MPS had the same type of material. Never had a problem with it deteriorating due to road debris. The Holden lining is actually stronger too. I know because I've pulled both out for various reasons.

I did something similar to my car, spray sound deadener in the wheel arches ages ago from Supercheap as normal plastic wheel arch things at the front and metal up the back.

Been meaning to do the inside on the front also next time im in that area to work on.

Evey lil bit helps

I imagine the carpet-like material stops a lot of the noise that objects would make when they hit the plastic lining after being picked up by the tyre. I've just been spraying mine down with high pressure water, so far I've actually found it easier to clean than plastic lining which generally needs a bit of a scrub to get the dirt off.
