For a short (or long, for their supporters at the time) while their engines were being developed in the UK at prodrive HQ, after the dismal failure of the program to produce a reliable engine (let alone one with good power and drivability) the plug was pulled and an in house engine workshop was set up where benson had much more success (and is now departing back to NASCAR in the US)

I don't know if all the teams start from a shell, but I know someone who was responsible for removing unnecessary brackets and adding a few different pieces into the pedal box for the shells that come from the factory that were used by FPR, DJR etc. They would do a short run of them, then they would be sent off to the teams for them to build up, so I know for a fact that some teams do start from a full shell that has been modified in the factory for the race teams.
