Hi Guys,
I was just wondering if there was any way to stop the lights in my EL fairmont going yellow and if there is any way to clean them. Apparently it is a common fault with early EL's and EF's but I have never heard of a way to clean them... |

they wont clean...
I strongly suggest The Headlight Hospital, probably the only way your going to fix it without getting new items from Ford ($300+ EACH) www.theheadlighthospital.com.au PM The Dok, he runs it...

If you sand them with 1500 grit wet & dry sandpaper, then 2000 grit until its smooth, and finish with a buffing wheel and a cutting compound. They'll come up pretty clear again, as long as they arent really yellow beforehand.
The reason they go yellow is from water sitting on the headlights while they lights are on, the water heats up and eventually wears away the outer coating on the plastic lenses. 2 ways you can fix the problem is by fitting lens protectors, or using HID globes, which run cooler than normal globes, might stop it too.

It is the ИИИИ plastic Ford used, Commodores and AU-BF use plastic lenses and they don't go yellow :(

Yep. I cleaned mine up with sandpaper and polish and came up nice. Get a roll of duct tape and put a few layers on the bodywork around the light to protect it, and go over it with some fine sandpaper until the yellow is gone. I then used some sort of cut 'n' polish compound on buffer to get it clear again. Takes about 20 minutes per light and costs maybe $30 all up.
Well worth the effort. It makes a massive difference to the look of the car.

Yeah it's UV damage more than water damage. Philips actually manufactures a headlight globe with a special UV filter coating especially for this reason so they don't go yellow.
