Hi Guys,
My diff makes a bit of whining noise, so if I have to spend $$$ at the diff shop, I would want to: Get new crownwheel & pinion fitted with 3.45 ratio. (3.23 at present) Is it possible to get the cw&p new & at what cost?? or would I be better off getting a cheapie from the wreckers & have that recoed & lapped etc?? As far as the tranny goes , is it a simple matter of swapping a speedo cog to get the speedo correct for the different ratio?? Or does FORD use some other method?? cheers

G'day Ian,
Regarding the tranny, yes there is a small piece of cogged plastic which is inexpensive from Ford. Most people who bother to have diff work done will get an LSD conversion at the same time. I would have thought an EL would have a 3.08 stock? Normal prices including labour are in the $700-900 range for 3.45 gearing and an LSD centre using reco parts, whereas new can cost $1500. |

Trouty, thanks for your reply. The diff is missing the ratio tag, so I am only going on what the owners manual says which specifies 3.23 for wagons. I am not that fussed with lsd's having come from a 4wd background, i find that they are not much better than standard & they lose effectiveness after a while, anyway. I have front & rear lockers on my Pajero!. So I guess I need to know if I can just buy the 3.45 cw&p & use my non lsd hemisphere & maybe just get the bearings done. The diff whines which from past experience is not a bearing fault. The cw&p should swap straight in , shouldnt it?? Were the cw& pinions for the sedans different from the wagons(apart from the ratio), as the wagons have a leaf rear end?? That would stuff me up asn there we no Ghia or Xr6 wagons!. As for the speedo cog, I would just go to the dealer & get one for a EL Ghia , is that correct. cheers
