Default leads leads and more leads, but what leads?

Ok, thinking my problem is in the ignition leads so am getting ready to rip the buggers out and start over.

Have read an excellent post on fordmods about the process of replacing the leads and the easiest way to get to them.

So now the question is, which leads?

I visited my local Bursons and Repco today, and I'll think twice about ever purchasing from repco again, what a price hike compared to bursons, and yes it was apples for apples.

Anyway, the guys at bursons were very helpful and suggested some leads, I'm holding off anyway as I don't have time till friday to complete the job, so that gave me time to ask here!

So the options are,

NGK Sports Leads - Approx $84
Bosch Hi-End Sports Leads - Approx $79
Top Gun Leads - Approx $70

The TopGun and Bosch were approx $30 more at repco not 3km's down the road. :

Anyway, I was told most holden/fords are fitted with the Bosch leads and they are very good, as are the NGK, although there would be no real difference for the sake of $5.
Top gun on the other hand I have never heard of, the guys at bursons said they were quite a good lead, although they felt spending the extra $10 or so was probably a good idea.

At the moment the leads are motorcraft leads and I have the feeling they have royaly ИИИИИ themselves, I have also been told they were pretty average leads to begin with (been in since the day I bought the car).

So which leads are better suited to the I6 on petrol?

NGK spark plugs and leads all the way, i've got LPG and they have never let me down. Don't even touch Bosch, they are only good for flossing your ***, not that i do that in my spare time.

Leads are leads, just get a set of standard Bosch ones from Supercheap, they are cheaper individually than in the packs also. (like $3.50 each vs $30 for the pack)

This raises an interesting question for me, is it worth, considering the car is NOT a performance vehicle, just purchasing run of the mill leads, will it make all that much difference is spending extra money? I mean in a performance application I could see the benefits, but will there be any benefits in this particular scenario?

I wouldn't recommend the Top Gun leads - I had them on my spider and the end connectors chopped through the insulation. Had to chuck them away and I'm currently using a motly collection of leads I had in the shed (bit of Bosch but mostly no name brands). Having said that, the Jeep has Top Gun on it and they've been OK for the last 10,000 so you never know.

NGK make superb spark plugs - I know you can't assume the leads will be as good but I'll be buying some as a proper replacement set.

cheers,

dave.

how do you know that your leads are stuffed?

have you measured the resistance of the individual leads?

has the coil been checked?

what about cleaning and gapping the spark plugs?

Coil isnt a month old yet, it's new as, between the sparks and leads, except the sparks where replaced 20,000 ago, the leads are over 60,000 old... i believe it's one of the two, i'm uring on the side of the leads, thinking i'll go the leads first as the cylinders seem to fire perfectly except when under load

I was talking to the mechanic who was dynoing my car last weekend, and he recommended ИИИИing off my topgun leads that have never failed me. But make sure I get spiral bound leads. Even Topgun spiral bound ones were ment to be ok.

He suggested Bosch LPG leads (??) as a budget set.

I'm yet to decide, living in the country, repco is the only place I really have to buy bits :( I dont like being ripped off.

I'm using the Ford motorcraft leads and they've been fantastic. I get them at trade price so that's probably why lol but yeah I would consider them. Can't remember the retail price for motorcraft leads for an EL, but I know they come in 2 sets, 1-3 and 4-6, but I believe you can buy them individually. Part # for 1-3 I think is EHC12286A and 4-6 is EHC12287A.
