Default replacing valve stem seals

hey has anyone replaced the valve stem seals on a EA-ED without removing the head?..am relpacing them on a mates ED..hand book only mentions it when removing the head,but dont want to got to that trouble if we dont have to

It can be done without removing the head. You will need an overhead valve spring compressor to get the valvesprings out and a special slide hammer tool to get the old valve stem seals off the head, but other then that its pretty easy and about a days work. Just make sure you don't let the valve fall into the cylinder when you take the valvesprings out.

Unfortunantly (for you, and for me) you must remove the head, to my knowledge. So as my mate explained it, if you wanna get some cam work or any other work to the engine, get a professional to do the work, and ask em to do the valve stem seals too... Cheapest professional way around it.

If your adement on doing it yourself, ya gotta remove the head. Alot of stuff'n aroun. Your book shuld help ya thru it... Pitty i didnt have a book when i done it on my old ZK... took for ever lol

Can I ask why you would be replacing them?

Because I currently have an issue with my car that when I start it up in the morning blue smoke ****es out the exhaust. Its only for about 2 minutes max at start up then its right all day.

So somehow, when the car sits for to long oil is getting in, but it must leak very slowly. Anyone got any ideas? Its definatley not affecting performance or economy.

yeah... my mates ED has pretty much the same problem...on starting it blows thick blue smoke which gradually dissapears..the consensus is that its the valve stem seals,because if it was the piston rings it would smoke continuously....dont think its a head gasket,as it was replaced 1 year ago,and its not going through coolant.He replaced the head last year with a 2nd hand one from a wreckers.....the head was machined but the seals would have been the old ones.

Best way to check for stem seal problems is decelerating down hill. The high manifold vaccum draws the oil down the valve into the cylinder and it blows smoke.

Just use a gregorys service manual and some initiative and you should be fine. Thats how I did mine and you can always post on here if you get stuck with something.

You shove a length of rope through the sparkplug hole to stop the valves from falling into the cylinder once you take the collets and springs out. Another method is filling the cylinder with compressed air by using a fitting that is screwed into the sparkplug hole. I use the compressed air method and take the springs off and put them on one at a time and turn whatever cylinder I am working on to TDC so if a valve falls it can only fall a few cm.

Yeah ive got the same question as ned.

Also Imguessing that while its not ideal to run around with this issue, if I was going to get a cam soon should I just wait until then and get everything done?

Cam doesn't need to come out to do valve stem seals, but rocker assembly does so it would be worth doing both in the one hit.

Yep ive done the stem seals in a eb with 4 litre.
wat you do is remove all spark plugs and remove fan and fanshroud.
starting with number 6 cylinder place the piston to top dead centre.
remove valve spring and let the valve rest on the piston.
remove old stem seal and put new stem seal in it.
