Well the saga continues on my EF, just noticed today a bit of a knock, put it on the ramps tonight and had a listen and as you rev the car the knock gets quicker with revs and seems to be at the bottom of the engine rather than the top, I had a listen up top then under the sump and was definately louder at the sump end. You dont hear the knock straight away when you start the engine from sitting a while but after a little warm up its kicks in.
sound like the death rattles?? say if its is the big ends can they be done without pulling the engine out of the car? whats the procedure? cheers.

Yeah. It could be done it but no pooint really. Just pull the engine, put it on an engine stand and get to work.
BTW: How about just posting in one forum at a time. It will save people answering questions that have already been answered elsewhere

it would be a weekend job at home.....just to change bearings. I would strip bottom end while out and machine and balance properly and wack in some new rings etc. Parts and machining wouldn't cost more than $600. And maybe a new oil pump. Then it would be as good as new.

Well im pretty happy, just found something I missed somehow, The back of my sump is dinted in and turns out its just hitting on a rod or the crank so im either going to pull the sump off and fix it or mig a nut on the bottom of it screw a bolt into it and pull it out. It must be only just hitting it because when the car is cold you cant hear it.
Anyways im happy I dont have to yank motor and crank for now. Cheers.
