Default DOHC Camshaft Seal R&R Methods

Question for those with greasy fingers.

I’ve typically replaced these seals by removing the double bearing cap to extract the old seals, refitting the cap with no seals and gasket compound at its interface, then driving the seals in concentrically.

The other day I saw in a video, a chap replacing seals slightly differently. He removed them the same way, but slid the new seals into position before refitting the double cap - then did it as one.

Has anyone made a regular practice of doing them in such a way? I’d be worried about pinching the OD of the seal.

Nobody else replaces dual camshaft seals? Surely some here, do!

CB the only cam seals I've replaced regularly was with the 1.8 Mazda MX5 race car, from memory I've done them both ways but ended up replacing without removing the caps.
Main reason was I was worried about seating the caps properly and causing one or both to bind up on the locators and damaging a $2000 head.

Was probably a million to one chance of that happening but you know tightarse!

I guess it's like reinstalling a Detroit 92 series head.
They use all seals on the mating surfaces compared to the older gasket type heads.
Very easy to pop a seal out of place when lowering a head back down on the sloping block.

Sounds similar to a C15 I nearly buggered up.
Dropping a head down by myself on a Sunday with a forklift/jib and no come along.
The oil drain has a large rubber seal sits on the block inside sandwich plate and gasket. On lowering the head I had dislodged it and it was partially sitting inside the oil drain in the block. Was lucky I double checked when the head was ~5mm off the block before dropping it down completely.

Sorry, not related to CBs query.

What’s a forum without digressions? (A: Probably an English-moderated forum for some obscure interest…)

Sounds like general consensus remains with driving the seals in, afterwards.
